Portrait of 'Adele Bloch-Bauer I' is a 1907 painting by Gustav Klimt. According to press reports it was sold for US$135 million to Ronald Lauder for his Neue Galerie in New York City in June 2006, which made it at that time the most expensive painting. Klimt took three years to complete the painting. It measures 54" x 54" [138 x 138 cm] and is made of oil and gold on canvas, showing elaborate and complex ornamentation as seen in the Jugendstil style. Klimt was a member of the Vienna Secession, a group of artists that broke away from the traditional way of painting. The picture was painted in Vienna and commissioned by Ferdinand Bloch-Bauer who was a banker and who married Adele when she was 18 and he was 35. Sadly, their three children all died at birth and Adele died in 1925. As a wealthy industrialist who had made his fortune in the sugar industry, he sponsored the arts and favoured and supported Gustav Klimt. Adele Bloch-Bauer became the only model who was painted twice by Klimt when he completed a second picture of her, Adele Bloch-Bauer II, in 1912. The picture was only returned to its rightful owner, Adele's niece, Maria Altmann, in 2006. Maria, who fled occupied Austria to the USA with her husband (saved by ransom from Dachau) remembered her aunt well 'I never saw her smile. She was always very serious and wore flowing white dresses and carried a gold cigarette holder when it was very unusual for women to smoke. She had a salon rather than ladies tea parties.'. Title: Claude Monet Limited Edition (One of only 50 Published Worldwide) "Rue Montorgueil" Description: 7815 - Limited edition by Claude Monet titled "The Rue Montorgueil, Paris - Celebration 0f June 30, 1878". The Rue Montorgueil is often thought to depict a 14 July celebration, in fact it was painted on 30 June 1878 for a festival declared that year by the government celebrating "peace and work". This was one of the events organised for the third Universal Exhibition in Paris a few weeks after it opened, and intended to be a symbol of Frances recovery after the defeat of the 1870 Franco-Prussian War. As well as demonstrating nationalist enthusiasm, the celebrations of 30 June 1878 were also an opportunity to strengthen the position of the Republican regime. It was two years later, in 1880, that 14 July was designated the French National Day. This painting proposes a distanced vision of an urban landscape by a painter who did not mix with the crowd, but observed it from a window. The three colours of blue, white and red vibrating in Monet's painting are those of modern France. The impressionist technique, with its multitude of small strokes of colour, suggests the animation of the crowd and the wavering of flags. The flags along Rue Montorgueil look fine when you first glance at the painting, but not if you look directly at them, or after you study the details carefully. This effect is called illusory conjunction. The paintings spatial imprecision is not so noticeable at first because our own spatial imprecision allows illusory conjunctions to complete the objects. This explains why we see complete flags in the painting, even though many of them are just a single stroke of paint. Note: supplied with a replacement valuation for £2400 along with biographical details on the artist (free of charge) Artist Biography: Born in Smolensk, Russia, Alex Jawdokimov led a remarkable life. He was brought up on a kolhoz (collective farm), but spent many of his childhood years in various concentration camps across Europe. He came to England in 1950 by way of Germany with his mother, who was a World War II refugee. He speaks Russian, German and English and became a naturalised British subject five years after arriving in the country. He was a student at the Somerset College of Art, Taunton. In 1956 Alex Jawdokimov spent a brief spell in Canada, learning to fly with the RAF. He then settled in London in 1958 and formed a Russian Cossack Dance Company (his mother had been a professional dancer in Russia) which toured Britain. He also began to act, mostly in minor roles for television. Film parts then followed and he can count amongst his credits films including Music Lovers, The Tamarind Seed and The Eagle Has Landed. Despite his love of acting, Alex Jawdokimov's interest was still principally in painting and he exhibited alongside hundreds of other artists every weekend on the Hyde Park Railings in the Bayswater Road. He then worked in an advertising agency, afterwards becoming a freelance artist and illustrator, but he soon tired of the routine and commercial aspect of the work and began to devote more and more of his attention to his own style and methods of painting. Film locations offered wonderful opportunities for on-the-spot sketching and the recording of various landscapes. As a result, Jawdokimov has painted many different areas of the British Isles and the Continent. He lived in North London with his family and his love of the city is exemplified in his many pieces of artwork depicting the famous landmarks and characters of the city where he had chosen to settle. Title: Joan Miro "Femme Oiseaux 1976" Rare Edition Description: 7810 - Limited Edition by the late world famous Spanish artist Joan Miro (1893-1983) titled "Femme, Oiseaux, 1976". This is one from an edition of only 75 published worldwide. Supplied complete with a certificate of authenticity, signed by the "Master Printer" and a replacement valuation of £1650, both free of charge. It has been superbly float mounted and framed to a high standard with a special cut designer mount. In excellent condition. Femme, Oiseaux is one of several paintings on the poetic theme of women, birds and the night which was a common subject for Miro in the 1960s and 70s. Miro was pursuing joint influences of recent American painting and of Japanese calligraphy on his own uniquely poetic, instinctive and gestural style of painting. American Painting, Miro admitted, had showed me a direction I wanted to take but which up to then had remained at the stage of an unfulfilled desire. When I saw these paintings, I said to myself, you can do it, too: go to it, you see, it is O.K.! You must remember that I grew up in the school of Paris. That was hard to break away from. Inspired by the dramatic large scale open field style of painting as pioneered by such artists as Jackson Pollock and Franz Kline, in the 1960s, Miro, after moving into the large studio he had always dreamed of, began also to make work on an ever increasing scale. In addition to this, a visit to Japan in 1966 for a retrospective of his work held in Tokyo allowed Miro to meet with Japanese poets, potters and calligraphers whose art he had always admired. In particular, as he recalled of this visit, I was fascinated by the work of the Japanese calligraphers and it definitely influenced my own working methods. I work more and more in a state of trance, I would say almost always in a trance these days. And I consider my painting more and more gestural. As Miros work of the 1960s progressed he became freer and more at ease with his working process. Similarly, as a work such as Femme, Oiseaux demonstrates, as a direct result of this practice, Miros forms grew more open and expansive, his gestural lines more dramatic and flowing while the poetic nature and integrity of his pictorial vocabulary remained essentially the same. Segregated into distinct fields of pure colour, the smooth flowing calligraphic lines of Miros powerful glyph-like imagery also signify strongly the transient path and process of their own creation. Title: The Fever Van Limited Edition by L.S. Lowry. Description: 7812 - Limited edition by L.S. Lowry titled "The Fever Van" This is actually number One from the edition of only 75 published Worldwide. Supplied complete with a certificate of authenticity, signed by the "Master Printer" and a replacement valuation of £1650, both free of charge. Superbly professionally framed and mounted. Mint condition. It shows an ambulance arriving to collect a patient from a small terraced house. The sufferer probably has diptheria or scarlet fever, both highly contagious diseases and widespread in industrial Britain in the 1930s. A lack of vaccinations meant that such diseases were frequently fatal. Lowry's treatment of the theme avoids excessive sentimentality; he goes for a distant view of the ambulance and the crowd gathered around it rather than a close-up of the drama. He was clearly interested in the effect of accidents on the urban scene and once said: "Accidents interest me - I have a very queer mind you know. What fascinates me is the people they attract. The patterns those people form, and the atmosphere of tension when something has happened‰ Where there's a quarrel there's always a crowd‰ It's a great draw. A quarrel or a body." Lowry is often characterised as a self-taught artist, but despite the apparent naivety of his work, drawing was always the foundation of his paintings. The cropped edges of "The Fever Van" give a feeling of incompleteness to the scene, suggesting the ephemeral and fragmentary character of life in industrial towns. In "The Fever Van" the red of the houses in the foreground contrasts with the greyish blue of the church in the distance. The smoke from the chimney on the left-hand side casts a shadow onto the walls opposite, serving as a visual metaphor for the all-pervasive smog of industrial Salford. Lowry's painting of figures is almost abstract because of the elimination of details. He once said: " Natural figures would have broken the spell of it, so I made them half unreal‰ Had I drawn them as they are, it would not have looked like a vision‰ I have been called a painter of Manchester work people. But my figures are not exactly that, they are ghostly figures‰ which seems to me so beautiful, they are symbols of my mind. They are myself.". Film locations offered wonderful opportunities for on-the-spot sketching and the recording of various landscapes. As a result, Jawdokimov has painted many different areas of the British Isles and the Continent. He lived in North London with his family and his love of the city is exemplified in his many pieces of artwork depicting the famous landmarks and characters of the city where he had chosen to settle. Born in 1895, Boris Smirnoff was largely inspired by the 1900s and 1910s. The dynamic development of pictorial art defined the first decades of the twentieth century. It was an era of experimentation and post-Impressionism, with artists first delving into Expressionism and Abstraction. Many different collectives and communities of artists across the world evolved many ways of expressing these crucial innovations. The Fauves are widely considered to be the first major Post-Impressionist group, working at the start of the twentieth century. Including artists such as Henry Matisse within their ranks, the Fauves believed that vivid, other worldly colours and vibrant brushstrokes were a key component of their work. During this same time period a young Pablo Picasso, still in his youth, created his famous Blue and Rose periods in Paris, and by the end of the 1920s he had established the initial ideas of portraying fractured views of reality alongside his contemporary Georges Braque. This movement became known as Analytical Cubism. The De Stijl group in the Netherlands, under the leadership of Piet Mondrian, started to practice important theories about Abstraction. Alongside this, Kasimir Malevich and his contemporaries developed Constructivism and Suprematism in the Soviet Union. These radical styles of art were demanding and politicised, and looked to serve a new world order. The first twenty years of the 20th century can be considered to be the most prolific, and are noted as the era in art history when modern and modernist ideas first began to take hold culturally. Mechanisation in production and ideas of order and rationality ensured the discipline of architecture to develop at an extraordinary rate, and was defined by in the work of Le Corbusier and Gerrit Rietveld. Bauhaus was prevalent at this time and defined the idea of a common discipline across all types of creative art. Most, if not all, of the ideologies of important art movements that we associate with modern and contemporary art can be traced back to the diverse range of work made during this era. The psychological applications of art began to be further explored and developed following the terrors of the WWI. Dadaism, a nonsensical and absurdist movement inspired directly by the war, sprung up in Paris, Berlin, Zurich and Hannover, and launched the careers of artists such as Marcel Duchamp, Francis Picabia, and Kurt Schwitters. The essential philosophies behind Dadaism would go on to find ground in Surrealism, which was the first art movement to fully integrate psychology and ideas about the subconscious, and took great inspiration from the work of Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung. At the same time, Expressive painting was being further established and explored in various places around the world. the Nabis in France were the first to truly explore this movement at the turn of the century, and German groups such as Die Brucke and Der Blaue Reiter soon followed suit, developing the careers of legendary artists such as Kirchner, Franz Marc, and Wassily Kandinsky. The record for a Roy Lichtenstein original at auction stands at $95.4m sold at Christie's in 2015. In the 1950s, Lichtenstein struggled with an abstract expressionist style to find his own identity as a painter. Towards the end of that decade, he started to experiment with cartoon imagery, immediately setting up a dichotomy between artistic form and popular commercial content. By 1961 he had begun to incorporate into his paintings imagery from popular culture, such as comic books and advertisements clipped from newspapers and telephone books. Look Mickey‰ 1961 was a breakthrough for the 37-year-old Lichtenstein and set the course of his career. Based on an illustration from Donald Duck Lost and Found 1960, a Little Golden Book owned by Lichtenstein‰ sons, it is considered his first pop painting (though it was not exhibited publicly until 1982). He made his rendering look like the cheapest of funnies, right down to its mimicry of three-colour printing, poor registration (the areas of colour do not quite fit together) and half-tone dots. This movement became known as Analytical Cubism. The De Stijl group in the Netherlands, under the leadership of Piet Mondrian, started to practice important theories about Abstraction. Alongside this, Kasimir Malevich and his contemporaries developed Constructivism and Suprematism in the Soviet Union. These radical styles of art were demanding and politicised and looked to serve a new world order. The first twenty years of the 20th century can be considered to be the most prolific and are noted as the era in art history when modern and modernist ideas first began to take hold culturally. Mechanisation in production and ideas of order and rationality ensured the discipline of architecture to develop at an extraordinary rate and was defined by in the work of Le Corbusier and Gerrit Rietveld. Bauhaus was prevalent at this time and defined the idea of a common discipline across all types of creative art. Most, if not all, of the ideologies of important art movements that we associate with modern and contemporary art can be traced back to the diverse range of work made during this era. The psychological applications of art began to be further explored and developed following the terrors of the WWI. Dadaism, a nonsensical and absurdist movement inspired directly by the war, sprung up in Paris, Berlin, Zurich and Hannover, and launched the careers of artists such as Marcel Duchamp, Francis Picabia and Kurt Schwitters. The essential philosophies behind Dadaism would go on to find ground in Surrealism, which was the first art movement to fully integrate psychology and ideas about the subconscious and took great inspiration from the work of Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung. At the same time, Expressive painting was being further established and explored in various places around the world. the Nabis in France were the first to truly explore this movement at the turn of the century, and German groups such as Die Brucke and Der Blaue Reiter soon followed suit, developing the careers of legendary artists such as Kirchner, Franz Marc, and Wassily Kandinsky.
