This rare original limited edition lithograph, which has been signed by Marina Picasso, forms part of the Marina Picasso Estate Collection and approved by the Heirs of Picasso. This rare piece was hand-printed by a traditional multi-plate method using one single plate for each colour. It has been professionally mounted and in mint condition. The painting by Eugene Delacroix entitled "The Women of Algiers in their Apartment" inspired a whole series of paintings by Picasso, who often undertook this type of tribute to an artist that he admired. Interestingly, his first version was painted six weeks after learning of the death of his lifelong friend, Hemi Matisse, and the oriental subject of this series of paintings held strong associations with Matisse, who had been famous for his images of languid, voluptuous women, known as odalisques. The original of this, which is known as Version 0, was sold in 2015 at public auction for almost U.S. $180 million. Picasso explores colour throughout this series of paintings, but he also produced one monochrome version. He also appreciated the patterning of the tiled interior which can be seen as a continuation of his concern with handicraft and folk embroideries from Eastern Europe. Picasso's sympathies remained with those who were deprived of their freedom or subjected to repression and torture and odalisques is the French word taken from the Turkish language for a woman living in a harem. The strong controls of the harem meant that the occupants had very little freedom. This period in the mid 1950s when Picasso had moved to Cannes in the South of France marked a return to his peak form; as he found great happiness at La Californie.. On stretcher ready to frame. See photos for condition. Born in 1895, Boris Smirnoff was largely inspired by the 1900s and 1910s. The dynamic development of pictorial art defined the first decades of the twentieth century. It was an era of experimentation and post-Impressionism, with artists first delving into Expressionism and Abstraction. Many different collectives and communities of artists across the world evolved many ways of expressing these crucial innovations. The Fauves are widely considered to be the first major Post-Impressionist group working at the start of the twentieth century. Including artists such as Henry Matisse within their ranks, the Fauves believed that vivid, other worldly colours and vibrant brushstrokes were a key component of their work. During this same time period a young Pablo Picasso, still in his youth, created his famous Blue and Rose periods in Paris, and by the end of the 1920s he had established the initial ideas of portraying fractured views of reality alongside his contemporary Georges Braque. This movement became known as Analytical Cubism. The De Stijl group in the Netherlands, under the leadership of Piet Mondrian, started to practice important theories about Abstraction. Alongside this, Kasimir Malevich and his contemporaries developed Constructivism and Suprematism in the Soviet Union. These radical styles of art were demanding and politicised and looked to serve a new world order. The first twenty years of the 20th century can be considered to be the most prolific and are noted as the era in art history when modern and modernist ideas first began to take hold culturally. Mechanisation in production and ideas of order and rationality ensured the discipline of architecture to develop at an extraordinary rate and was defined by in the work of Le Corbusier and Gerrit Rietveld. Bauhaus was prevalent at this time and defined the idea of a common discipline across all types of creative art. Most, if not all, of the ideologies of important art movements that we associate with modern and contemporary art can be traced back to the diverse range of work made during this era. The psychological applications of art began to be further explored and developed following the terrors of the WWI. Dadaism, a nonsensical and absurdist movement inspired directly by the war, sprung up in Paris, Berlin, Zurich and Hannover, and launched the careers of artists such as Marcel Duchamp, Francis Picabia and Kurt Schwitters. The essential philosophies behind Dadaism would go on to find ground in Surrealism, which was the first art movement to fully integrate psychology and ideas about the subconscious and took great inspiration from the work of Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung. At the same time, Expressive painting was being further established and explored in various places around the world. the Nabis in France were the first to truly explore this movement at the turn of the century, and German groups such as Die Brucke and Der Blaue Reiter soon followed suit, developing the careers of legendary artists such as Kirchner, Franz Marc, and Wassily Kandinsky.. Salvador Dali's interest in new scientific discoveries, particularly quantum physics and nuclear physics, is key to the works he produced in this time period. In Confesiones inconfesables (The Unspeakable Confessions, Bruguera, 1975) he recalled how "the atomic explosion from 6 August 1945 had seismically shaken me. From that moment on, the atom was my favourite subject of reflection." In the same decade, the 1940s, this new fascination was combined with the artist moving closer to the Catholic religion, along with a return to Academic Art by virtue of themes that drew inspiration from Western tradition, such as the Renaissance in Italy, and the Golden Age in Spain. Both influences together would give rise to the so-called "atomic period", and the publication of Manifiesto M√≠stico (Mystic Manifesto, 1951), where Dal√≠ explained the symbiosis that had lead him to the mystic-nuclear: "Every quarter of an hour and quarter of a second matter is in a constant and accelerated process of dematerialisation and disintegration, slipping through the grasp of the wise and showing us spirituality in all substance. In Maximum Speed of Raphael's Madonna the artist borrows the image of a Madonna by Raphael Sanzio, one of the great masters of the Renaissance and hugely admired by Dal√≠. The work synthesises great classical tradition through the theme of religion with the discoveries and experiences of modern art, engendering an image built from an interpretation of the theoretical principles of physics and art's visual possibilities. The face of the Virgin breaks up into spheres, geometrically perfect figures, and into forms resembling rhinoceros horns as Dal√≠ unearths logarithmic spiral forms based on the pattern of Divine Proportion. The dynamic movement of the elements is joined by the discontinuity of the matter, linking this work to the process of atomic disintegration.. It was printed to the highest standard with lightfast inks onto acid-free calcium carbonate-buffered stock, mould-made from 100% cotton. Image size approx. 61cm x 61cm. Mondrian was born in Holland in 1872 and was determined to become a painter from a young age. He qualified with a teaching degree in 1892, but enrolled for painting lessons, before moving to Amsterdam and registering at the Rijksacademie. Mondrian became a member of the art society Kunstliefde "Art Lovers" in Utrecht, where his first paintings were exhibited in 1893. He experimented with many different styles including naturalistic, impressionist and painting many landscapes of his native country. In 1911 he moved to Paris and the influence of Cubism, as evidenced by Picasso and Braque, started to appear almost immediately in his work. He spent the duration of the First World War back in Holland and continued his journey towards abstraction. After the War had finished Mondrian returned to France. He then moved to London in 1938 but relocated to New York just two years later in 1940, where he remained until his death. Mondrian is well known for his contribution to the development of modern abstract art. He strove to portray an extreme 'formal purity' through his combination of simplistic straight lines and bold primary colours. The Image: Mondrian spent the period 1914-1918 (World War I) back at his home in Holland and during this time, he decided to work on an abstract art form which was later classified as 'Neoplastic style'. This work was depicted by lighter colours, simplified colour selection and forms that were balanced in their composition. This work is a result of Mondrian joining the abstraction-creation line which was open to new styles, new techniques and at this time Mondrian began to be fascinated with the idea of the line and dismantling the very definition of painting. He argued that drawing and draughtsmanship which were exemplified in the line, had always lain at the heart of painting from the Renaissance artists to the Impressionists to the Modernists and no one had ever thought to challenge that..
