Like the Post-Impressionists, Lowry was interested in recording the nuances of everyday life, basing his work on observations of the world around him. His direct and distinctive style led art critic Jonathan Jones to call Lowry a "modern primitive" to be ranked alongside such artists as Henri Rousseau. A fan of its stiff consistency, Lowry painted with oil paints all of his life, using the paint straight from the tube. Just as Lowry was fascinated by capturing the quotidian, he was also quite elemental in his choice of materials. "I am a simple man," Lowry once said. This rare very high quality Limited Edition Print on paper was published with light-fast inks to BS1006 standard onto acid-free, calcium carbonate-buffered stock, mould-made from 100% cotton. The detail and quality of this rare print is outstanding. Following the atomic explosion over Hiroshima in 1945, Dali painted a number of fragmented heads and figures. Some of the shapes that form the head in this painting are solid and phallic shaped - inspired by rhinoceros horns. The upper area of the painting, with the halo and brown clouds resembles photographs of atomic explosions. The female face, with its tender expression and thin halo, is recognisable as the face of a Madonna by Raphael. Dali was a great admirer of renaissance Old Masters, Da Vinci and Raphael to be specific. The skull section in this work is based upon the inside of the dome of the Pantheon building in Rome. Dali has fragmented the head to show how the sense of order from the past, illustrated by the balance and reason of a classical icon, has been shattered by the advent of nuclear weapons. The motif of the shattered head was a common one amongst artists in the post-war years. This reflects the emotional turmoil of a period when nuclear war seemed like a reality, following the use of nuclear weapons in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. In this context, the delicate halo of the Madonna now suggests a nuclear mushroom cloud and her expression, with eyes downcast in prayer, seems particularly appropriate. Title: Edward Hopper Limited Edition "Nighthawks" 1 of Only 75 Published Description: 7945 - "Nighthawks" limited edition by the renowned American artist Edward Hopper. This is one of only 75 published Worldwide, numbered in the frank. NOTE: This limited edition will be supplied with a signed certificate of authenticity (signed by the Master Printer) and a replacement valuation for £1500 along with biographical details on the artist and the image. (Free of charge) Excellent condition. Image size approx 51cm x 100cm. "Nighthawks" was painted in 1942 by Edward Hopper. The subject portrays people sitting in a downtown diner late at night. It is, undoubtedly, Hopper's most famous work and is one of the most recognisable paintings in American art. Within months of its completion, it was sold to the Art Institute of Chicago for the sum of $3000, where it still hangs. According to Hopper's wife, Josephine, the painting was finished on the 21st January and her handwritten notes include the interesting possibility that the painting's evocative title may have had its origins as a reference to the beak-shaped nose of the man at the bar. She also said that Edward had posed for the two figures himself of the men, using a mirror, and he used his wife, Josephine, for the girl. The painting took around six weeks to complete. There is a possibility that Hopper was inspired by Vincent van Gogh's "Night Caf√©" which was being exhibited in New York at the time he painted this painting. No-one has clearly and safely identified the site of the painting but it is thought to have been at Mulry Square which is the intersection of Seventh Avenue South, Greenwich Avenue and West 11th Street, which was some seven blocks from Hopper's studio on Washington Square. Title: Original Painting By Alex Jawdokimov (1937-2019) Description: 5709 - Original painting on canvas by the late Alex Jawdokimov (1937-2019). Note: supplied with a replacement valuation for £1500 along with biographical details on the artist (free of charge). Artist Biography: Born in Smolensk, Russia, Alex Jawdokimov has led a remarkable life. He was brought up on a kolhoz (collective farm), but spent many of his childhood years in various concentration camps across Europe. He came to England in 1950 by way of Germany with his mother, who was a World War II refugee. He speaks Russian, German and English and became a naturalised British subject five years after arriving in the country. He was a student at the Somerset College of Art, Taunton. In 1956 Alex Jawdokimov spent a brief spell in Canada, learning to fly with the RAF. He then settled in London in 1958 and formed a Russian Cossack Dance Company (his mother had been a professional dancer in Russia) which toured Britain. He also began to act, mostly in minor roles for television. Film parts then followed and he can count amongst his credits films including "The Tamarind Seed" and "The Eagle Has Landed". Despite his love of acting, Alex Jawdokimov's interest was still principally in painting and he exhibited alongside hundreds of other artists every weekend on the Hyde Park Railings in the Bayswater Road. He then worked in an advertising agency, afterwards becoming a freelance artist and illustrator, but he soon tired of the routine and commercial aspect of the work and began to devote more and more of his attention to his own style and methods of painting. Film locations offered wonderful opportunities for on-the-spot sketching and the recording of various landscapes. As a result, Jawdokimov has painted many different areas of the British Isles and the Continent. He lived in North London with his family and his love of the city is exemplified in his many pieces of artwork depicting the famous landmarks and characters of the city where he had chosen to settle. Title: Original Framed Mixed Media Painting On Canvas By The Late Alex Jawdokimov. Description: 5433 - Original framed mixed media painting on canvas by the late Alex Jawdokimov. Note: supplied with a replacement valuation for £2400 along with biographical details on the artist (free of charge) Artist Biography: Born in Smolensk, Russia, Alex Jawdokimov led a remarkable life. He was brought up on a kolhoz (collective farm), but spent many of his childhood years in various concentration camps across Europe. He came to England in 1950 by way of Germany with his mother, who was a World War II refugee. He speaks Russian, German and English and became a naturalised British subject five years after arriving in the country. He was a student at the Somerset College of Art, Taunton. In 1956 Alex Jawdokimov spent a brief spell in Canada, learning to fly with the RAF. He then settled in London in 1958 and formed a Russian Cossack Dance Company (his mother had been a professional dancer in Russia) which toured Britain. He also began to act, mostly in minor roles for television. Film parts then followed and he can count amongst his credits films including Music Lovers, The Tamarind Seed and The Eagle Has Landed. Despite his love of acting, Alex Jawdokimov's interest was still principally in painting and he exhibited alongside hundreds of other artists every weekend on the Hyde Park Railings in the Bayswater Road. He then worked in an advertising agency, afterwards becoming a freelance artist and illustrator, but he soon tired of the routine and commercial aspect of the work and began to devote more and more of his attention to his own style and methods of painting. Film locations offered wonderful opportunities for on-the-spot sketching and the recording of various landscapes. As a result, Jawdokimov has painted many different areas of the British Isles and the Continent. He lived in North London with his family and his love of the city is exemplified in his many pieces of artwork depicting the famous landmarks and characters of the city where he had chosen to settle. He has had solo exhibitions in Roma, Udine and Edinburgh, and collective exhibitions in Bari, Viareggio, Venezia, Bologna, Cannes, Padua and New York and Mexico City. His interests in theatre and photography are dominant in his work and he is forever with a paint brush or camera in hand photographing everything from derelict buildings to everyday people rushing past in the streets, to the multitude of statues and fountains of his adopted city which he then recreates as a collage on canvas from his attic studio apartment overlooking many of Romes famous historical attractions.
