Born in 1895, Boris Smirnoff was largely inspired by the 1900s and 1910s. The dynamic development of pictorial art defined the first decades of the twentieth century. It was an era of experimentation and post-Impressionism, with artists first delving into Expressionism and Abstraction. Many different collectives and communities of artists across the world evolved many ways of expressing these crucial innovations. The Fauves are widely considered to be the first major Post-Impressionist group working at the start of the twentieth century. Including artists such as Henry Matisse within their ranks, the Fauves believed that vivid, other worldly colours and vibrant brushstrokes were a key component of their work. During this same time period a young Pablo Picasso, still in his youth, created his famous Blue and Rose periods in Paris, and by the end of the 1920s he had established the initial ideas of portraying fractured views of reality alongside his contemporary Georges Braque. This movement became known as Analytical Cubism. The De Stijl group in the Netherlands, under the leadership of Piet Mondrian, started to practice important theories about Abstraction. Alongside this, Kasimir Malevich and his contemporaries developed Constructivism and Suprematism in the Soviet Union. These radical styles of art were demanding and politicised, and looked to serve a new world order. The first twenty years of the 20th century can be considered to be the most prolific, and are noted as the era in art history when modern and modernist ideas first began to take hold culturally. Mechanisation in production and ideas of order and rationality ensured the discipline of architecture to develop at an extraordinary rate, and was defined by in the work of Le Corbusier and Gerrit Rietveld. Bauhaus was prevalent at this time and defined the idea of a common discipline across all types of creative art. Most, if not all, of the ideologies of important art movements that we associate with modern and contemporary art can be traced back to the diverse range of work made during this era. The psychological applications of art began to be further explored and developed following the terrors of the WWI. Dadaism, a nonsensical and absurdist movement inspired directly by the war, sprung up in Paris, Berlin, Zurich and Hannover, and launched the careers of artists such as Marcel Duchamp, Francis Picabia, Hannah H and Kurt Schwitters. The essential philosophies behind Dadaism would go on to find ground in Surrealism, which was the first art movement to fully integrate psychology and ideas about the subconscious, and took great inspiration from the work of Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung. At the same time, Expressive painting was being further established and explored in various places around the world. the Nabis in France were the first to truly explore this movement at the turn of the century, and German groups such as Die Brucke and Der Blaue Reiter soon followed suit, developing the careers of legendary artists such as Kirchner, Franz Marc, and Wassily Kandinsky. Giuseppe is a landscape artist who captures the beautiful land and seascapes of southern Italy and the Adriatic coastline with an imaginative mind and vibrant palette. His use of colour and the manner in which he applies in careful brush strokes or free flowing palette knife captures the idyllic rural setting of the fields, orchards, coastline and waterways of this tranquil part of Italy. Golden yellows, rust reds and burnt orange are mixed and applied to his canvases in such a way that they exude warmth and his light use of colour for the sky and the sea creates a hazy, subdued atmospheric feeling which is entirely appropriate for a calm sea on a warm day. Giuseppe studied at various art schools and colleges in Italy and in 1974 he was offered his first solo show in a gallery in Brindisi. Since then Giuseppe has not looked back and he exhibits regularly in galleries in the fashionable cities of Rome and Milan as well as keeping to his rural roots and showing in small resort towns around the country. Giuseppe has had his work shown at all the major art fairs in Italy as well as fairs in Frankfurt, Cannes, Dublin, London and Edinburgh. In the maturity of the creative path, Giuseppe DElia has reached the informal, one would say an "impure" abstraction since in his latest works a figural abstract persists: elements, not always and easily legible, of a deconstructed, decontextualized, reduced landscape almost to the mnemonic datum alone. Not only that the immediacy of the gesture and the sign - key factors, with the material, of the informal so to speak more classic - is obtained from a pre-established design from a pre-existing vision and reconstruction of reality, The brushstroke and the stroke of the spatula they are peremptory, sometimes "striking" in their rapidity, in the material stratifications, naturally due to the peculiarity of the more spontaneous and instinctive creative act that Delia now uses. The Roman cultural environment also pushes him to narrate everyday life in visionary ways: an unlived life, in which man lets himself be dragged into the vortex of his incessant and frenetic rhythms, losing sight of the time that passes too quickly, without being able to grasp the little things that surround him. All this explains the marginal role of the human figure in his painting: it is a simple presence, a shadow, a spectrum consumed by time, a time that chases incessantly, climbing to the top of dizzying and monumental skyscrapers. Man inevitably remains crushed and alienated from this magma which is todays¬†metropolis, a symbol of the power of hostile and aggressive power that dominates it. He developed his interest in painting and drawing in parallel with his primary career until, gradually, these activities gained more importance and in 1992 he left public service in order to spend more time painting. He now paints full time. John Chisnall has painted in various media throughout his life and now works mainly in watercolour, finding this medium well suited to catching both the atmosphere and the detail of a place. Largely self taught, although he did spend three years at Sutton School of Art studying life drawing, his paintings are direct celebrations of visual pleasures and ignore the darker sides of modern life. Exhibiting extensively in galleries throughout the UK, he has had six one-man shows in the last 15 years and has illustrated several books on local villages and parishes in Surrey. Title: Alex Jawdokimov Original Painting On Canvas. Description: 5529 - Original painting on canvas of an atmospheric country scene by the late Alex Jawdokimov (1937-2019). Born in Smolensk, Russia, Alex Jawdokimov has led a remarkable life. He was brought up on a kolhoz (collective farm), but spent many of his childhood years in various concentration camps across Europe. He came to England in 1950 by way of Germany with his mother, who was a World War II refugee. He speaks Russian, German and English and became a naturalised British subject five years after arriving in the country. He was a student at the Somerset College of Art, Taunton. In 1956 Alex Jawdokimov spent a brief spell in Canada, learning to fly with the RAF. He then settled in London in 1958 and formed a Russian Cossack Dance Company (his mother had been a professional dancer in Russia) which toured Britain. He also began to act, mostly in minor roles for television. Film parts then followed and he can count amongst his credits films including "Music Lovers", "The Tamarind Seed" and "The Eagle Has Landed". Despite his love of acting, Alex Jawdokimov"s interest was still principally in painting and he exhibited alongside hundreds of other artists every weekend on the Hyde Park Railings in the Bayswater Road. He then worked in an advertising agency, afterwards becoming a freelance artist and illustrator, but he soon tired of the routine and commercial aspect of the work and began to devote more and more of his attention to his own style and methods of painting. Film locations offered wonderful opportunities for on-the-spot sketching and the recording of various landscapes. As a result, Jawdokimov has painted many different areas of the British Isles and the Continent. He lives in North London with his family and his love of the city is exemplified in his many pieces of artwork depicting the famous landmarks and characters of the city where he has chosen to settle. Artist Biography: Gerry Baptist's paintings convey an immediate frisson; he creates landscape and figure studies in vibrant colour possessing a natural talent for composition. His paintings are startling in their effectiveness, having a clarity, vivaciousness coupled with a powerful vision. Born in India in 1935 of British/Portuguese parents, Baptist's artistic education began at home; his father a musician, writer and artist, his mother, drawn to nature. Baptist likely gets his insatiable curiosity in life from his bohemian upbringing. "Our home was just a chaos of music, books and art - it was like living in a wild flower garden where everything was allowed to thrive." Later, the family moved to England, where he finished schooling before studying painting and graphics at Walthamstow School of Art and The London College of Printing and Graphic Art, eventually joining an advertising agency as an Art Director. Throughout this time his love of painting continued- after working he often created large scale abstracts well into the night. His inquiring mind led Baptist to be an early adopter of digital technology, it permitted a new freedom, something he relished. He was drawn to the art of those that forged their own paths, such as Willem de Kooning, Philip Guston and Pablo Picasso. He marries influences from Expressionism, Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art and even Graphic Art and Comics into his work. Colour and excitement pour out of his paintings with a cheerful brilliance and perhaps an unconscious link with his early years in India or simply an attraction to the joy and colour he finds around him on a daily basis. His garden landscapes, a vibrant celebration of the good and the beautiful, touch on the more pressing topic of what we could lose if we do not care for the Earth. His figurative work also address the big issues, exploring greed, consumerism and morality. Masterful in his approach to producing joyful, indulgent and mesmerising pieces, Baptist challenges the status quo and, ultimately, the viewer. Painted in 1946, Good Friday, Daisy Nook shows a crowd at the annual Easter fair at Daisy Nook, near Manchester. When this cheerful painting was offered at Christie"s in London on 8 June 2007, it soared past its high estimate of £1.5 million and set a new world auction record for Lowry at the time of £3.8 million. Title: "The Fever Van" Limited Edition By L.S. Lowry. Description: 9590 - Limited edition by L.S. Lowry titled "The Fever Van" This is one from the edition of only 75 published Worldwide. Supplied complete with a certificate of authenticity, signed by the "Master Printer" and a replacement valuation of £1650, both free of charge. Professionally mounted. Excellent condition. It shows an ambulance arriving to collect a patient from a small terraced house. The sufferer probably has diphtheria or scarlet fever, both highly contagious diseases and widespread in industrial Britain in the 1930s. A lack of vaccinations meant that such diseases were frequently fatal. Lowry's treatment of the theme avoids excessive sentimentality; he goes for a distant view of the ambulance and the crowd gathered around it rather than a close-up of the drama. He was clearly interested in the effect of accidents on the urban scene and once sai D: "Accidents interest me - I have a very queer mind you know. What fascinates me is the people they attract. The patterns those people form, and the atmosphere of tension when something has happened‚ Where there's a quarrel there's always a crowd‚ It's a great draw. A quarrel or a body." Lowry is often characterised as a self-taught artist, but despite the apparent naivety of his work, drawing was always the foundation of his paintings. The cropped edges of "The Fever Van" give a feeling of incompleteness to the scene, suggesting the ephemeral and fragmentary character of life in industrial towns. In "The Fever Van" the red of the houses in the foreground contrasts with the greyish blue of the church in the distance. The smoke from the chimney on the left-hand side casts a shadow onto the walls opposite, serving as a visual metaphor for the all-pervasive smog of industrial Salford. Lowry's painting of figures is almost abstract because of the elimination of details. He once sai D: " Natural figures would have broken the spell of it, so I made them half unreal‚ Had I drawn them as they are, it would not have looked like a vision‚ I have been called a painter of Manchester work people. But my figures are not exactly that, they are ghostly figures‚ which seems to me so beautiful, they are symbols of my mind. They are myself.".
