Title: Johannes Vermeer 'Girl With A Pearl Earring' Platinum Leaf Rare Limited Edition Silkscreen Description: 1919 - Rare limited edition of Johannes Vermeer's "Girl with a Pearl Earring" This rare edition is one of only 100 published Worldwide. The quality of this hand crafted edition is outstanding with the girl's earring hand-embellished with genuine 'Platinum Leaf'. This fabulous Silkscreen artwork is on museum grade paper. Girl with a Pearl Earring was originally titled Girl with a Turban and it wasn't until the second half of the twentieth century that the name was changed. Regarded as Vermeer's masterpiece, this canvas is often referred to as the Mona Lisa of the North or the Dutch Mona Lisa. The girl in this painting is believed to be Vermeer's eldest daughter, Maria, who was about twelve or thirteen-years-old at the time it was created. Her facial features appear in several of Vermeer's works but his various techniques on his subject make it difficult to compare the female faces in his paintings, as the woman are portrayed in different lighting conditions and poses. There is very little information about Vermeer and his paintings. Girl with a Pearl Earring is signed "IVMeer" but there is no date on this work. It remains unknown whether or not this canvas was commissioned and if so, by whom. It's more likely that this image was a tronie, Dutch 17th-century description of a 'head' painting that was not intended as a portrait. With this painting the viewer is captured by the subject and believes they have caught her attention and caused her to turn her head. This is a sensual painting with the girl gazing at the viewer with wide eyes and a parted mouth and there is an air of mystery surrounding her identity. In 1994 this canvas was restored which involved removing the yellowed varnish along with the retouches that had been made during previous restorations. This resulted in the vivid colours originally used by Vermeer shining through and the intimacy of the girl's gaze was also greatly enhanced. Girl with a Pearl Earring is Vermeer"s most famous painting and one of the most recognisable pieces of art of all time. Vermeer mastered shadow and light in his work. He shows the softness of the girls" face, the playful reflection in her eyes and the glimmer of light in the pearl earring marking this as a striking and engaging piece. Completed in 1665, this is not a portrait but a ‚Äútronie‚Äù- the figure is a figment of Vermeer"s imagination. Tronies usually depict a character, in this case a girl who is wearing a fashionable, exotic dress and wears an oriental turban and most importantly, a large pearl in her ear. The record for a Roy Lichtenstein original at auction stands at $95.4m sold at Christie's in 2015. In the 1950s, Lichtenstein struggled with an abstract expressionist style to find his own identity as a painter. Towards the end of that decade, he started to experiment with cartoon imagery, immediately setting up a dichotomy between artistic form and popular commercial content. By 1961 he had begun to incorporate into his paintings imagery from popular culture, such as comic books and advertisements clipped from newspapers and telephone books. "Look Mickey" 1961 was a breakthrough for the 37-year-old Lichtenstein and set the course of his career. Based on an illustration from Donald Duck Lost and Found 1960, a Little Golden Book owned by Lichtenstein"s sons, it is considered his first pop painting (though it was not exhibited publicly until 1982). He made his rendering look like the cheapest of funnies, right down to its mimicry of three-colour printing, poor registration (the areas of colour do not quite fit together) and half-tone dots. Faint pencil lines show Lichtenstein adjusting pose and composition. Never in his life a straight copier, he sought to bring an aesthetic and formal order to his sources. The painting by Eugene Delacroix entitled "The Women of Algiers in their Apartment" inspired a whole series of paintings by Picasso, who often undertook this type of tribute to an artist that he admired. Interestingly, his first version was painted six weeks after learning of the death of his lifelong friend, Hemi Matisse, and the oriental subject of this series of paintings held strong associations with Matisse, who had been famous for his images of languid, voluptuous women, known as odalisques. The original of this, which is known as Version 0, was sold in 2015 at public auction for almost U.S. $180 million. Picasso explores colour throughout this series of paintings, but he also produced one monochrome version. He also appreciated the patterning of the tiled interior which can be seen as a continuation of his concern with handicraft and folk embroideries from Eastern Europe. Picasso's sympathies remained with those who were deprived of their freedom or subjected to repression and torture and odalisques is the French word taken from the Turkish language for a woman living in a harem. The strong controls of the harem meant that the occupants had very little freedom. This period in the mid 1950s when Picasso had moved to Cannes in the South of France marked a return to his peak form; as he found great happiness at La Californie. Title: The Fever Van Limited Edition By L.S. Lowry. Description: 1910 - Limited edition by L.S. Lowry titled "The Fever Van" This is one from the edition of only 75 published Worldwide. Supplied complete with a certificate of authenticity, signed by the "Master Printer" and a replacement valuation of £1650, both free of charge. Professionally mounted and framed in an expensive hand made frame. Excellent condition. It shows an ambulance arriving to collect a patient from a small terraced house. The sufferer probably has diphtheria or scarlet fever, both highly contagious diseases and widespread in industrial Britain in the 1930s. A lack of vaccinations meant that such diseases were frequently fatal. Lowry's treatment of the theme avoids excessive sentimentality; he goes for a distant view of the ambulance and the crowd gathered around it rather than a close-up of the drama. He was clearly interested in the effect of accidents on the urban scene and once said: "Accidents interest me - I have a very queer mind you know. What fascinates me is the people they attract. The patterns those people form, and the atmosphere of tension when something has happened‚ "Where there's a quarrel there's always a crowd" It's a great draw. A quarrel or a body." Lowry is often characterised as a self-taught artist, but despite the apparent naivety of his work, drawing was always the foundation of his paintings. The cropped edges of "The Fever Van" give a feeling of incompleteness to the scene, suggesting the ephemeral and fragmentary character of life in industrial towns. In "The Fever Van" the red of the houses in the foreground contrasts with the greyish blue of the church in the distance. The smoke from the chimney on the left-hand side casts a shadow onto the walls opposite, serving as a visual metaphor for the all-pervasive smog of industrial Salford. Lowry's painting of figures is almost abstract because of the elimination of details. He once said: " Natural figures would have broken the spell of it, so I made them half unreal. Had I drawn them as they are, it would not have looked like a vision‚ I have been called a painter of Manchester work people. But my figures are not exactly that, they are ghostly figures‚ which seems to me so beautiful, they are symbols of my mind. They are myself.". Title: Joan Miro "Femme Oiseaux 1976" Rare Limited Edition Description: 1915 - Rare Limited Edition by the world famous Spanish artist Joan Miro (1893-1983) titled "Femme, Oiseaux, 1976". This is one from a sold out edition of only 75 published worldwide. Supplied complete with a certificate of authenticity, signed by the "Master Printer" and a replacement valuation of £1650, both free of charge. It has been superbly mounted and framed. In superb condition. Femme, Oiseaux is one of several paintings on the poetic theme of women, birds and the night which was a common subject for Miro in the 1960s and 70s. Miro was pursuing joint influences of recent American painting and of Japanese calligraphy on his own uniquely poetic, instinctive and gestural style of painting. American Painting, Miro admitted, had showed me a direction I wanted to take but which up to then had remained at the stage of an unfulfilled desire. When I saw these paintings, I said to myself, you can do it, too: go to it, you see, it is O.K.! You must remember that I grew up in the school of Paris. That was hard to break away from. Inspired by the dramatic large scale open field style of painting as pioneered by such artists as Jackson Pollock and Franz Kline, in the 1960s, Miro, after moving into the large studio he had always dreamed of, began also to make work on an ever increasing scale. In addition to this, a visit to Japan in 1966 for a retrospective of his work held in Tokyo allowed Miro to meet with Japanese poets, potters and calligraphers whose art he had always admired. In particular, as he recalled of this visit, I was fascinated by the work of the Japanese calligraphers and it definitely influenced my own working methods. I work more and more in a state of trance, I would say almost always in a trance these days. And I consider my painting more and more gestural. As Miros work of the 1960s progressed he became freer and more at ease with his working process. Similarly, as a work such as Femme, Oiseaux demonstrates, as a direct result of this practice, Miros forms grew more open and expansive, his gestural lines more dramatic and flowing while the poetic nature and integrity of his pictorial vocabulary remained essentially the same. Segregated into distinct fields of pure colour, .the smooth flowing calligraphic lines of Miros powerful glyph-like imagery also signify strongly the transient path and process of their own creation. Title: Original Painting By John Chisnall "St. Leonards Terrace, Chelsea" Description: 1923 - Original watercolour by the English artist John Chisnall. Title "St. Leonards Terrace, Chelsea". This very fine original painting has been professionally mounted and framed and is in excellent condition. John Chisnall was born in Carshalton, Surrey in 1943 where he spent the first twenty years of his life. He had a very successful career in the public sector, managing the design and construction of a wide range of buildings and civil engineering structures for the government estate. The professional experience gained in this field has given him extensive knowledge of many of the subjects he now explores in his paintings. He developed his interest in painting and drawing in parallel with his primary career until, gradually, these activities gained more importance and in 1992 he left public service in order to spend more time painting. John Chisnall has painted in various media throughout his life and now works mainly in watercolour, finding this medium well suited to catching both the atmosphere and the detail of a place. Largely self taught, although he did spend three years at Sutton School of Art studying life drawing, his paintings are direct celebrations of visual pleasures and ignore the darker sides of modern life. Exhibiting extensively in galleries throughout the UK, he has had six one-man shows in the last 15 years and has illustrated several books on local villages and parishes in Surrey. Artist Biography: Gerry Baptist's paintings convey an immediate frisson; he creates landscape and figure studies in vibrant colour possessing a natural talent for composition. His paintings are startling in their effectiveness, having a clarity, vivaciousness coupled with a powerful vision. Born in India in 1935 of British/Portuguese parents, Baptist's artistic education began at home; his father a musician, writer and artist, his mother, drawn to nature. Baptist likely gets his insatiable curiosity in life from his bohemian upbringing. "Our home was just a chaos of music, books and art - it was like living in a wild flower garden where everything was allowed to thrive." Later, the family moved to England, where he finished schooling before studying painting and graphics at Walthamstow School of Art and The London College of Printing and Graphic Art, eventually joining an advertising agency as an Art Director. Throughout this time his love of painting continued- after working he often created large scale abstracts well into the night. His inquiring mind led Baptist to be an early adopter of digital technology, it permitted a new freedom, something he relished. He was drawn to the art of those that forged their own paths, such as Willem de Kooning, Philip Guston and Pablo Picasso. He marries influences from Expressionism, Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art and even Graphic Art and Comics into his work. Colour and excitement pour out of his paintings with a cheerful brilliance and perhaps an unconscious link with his early years in India or simply an attraction to the joy and colour he finds around him on a daily basis. The vibrant cultures acquired in her home cities, in particular from her time in New Orleans, Miami and Quebec, have inspired Marsha Hammel's passion for the two prevalent themes in her art, music and figure. During her education, Marsha Hammel was taught a classical and European approach to art and, in spite of being told later that contemporary artists should produce conceptual or abstract pieces, the classical idea still governs her work. On January 2nd, 1911, Kandinsky and other members of the Neue Kunstlervereinigung Munchen, attended a concert featuring works by Arnold Schoenberg. This painting is reality in dissolution, but still present with the grand piano, audience shapes, yellow representing irrepressible vitality and colours and sound going together. This was the first painting that he made after the concert and the word 'impression' referred to paintings that reproduced a direct expression of an internal nature. This picture is not the particular concert he heard, but his overall impression of the music performance however the central image of the painting is the black angular block representing the piano, so this particular concert is at the heart of the picture. It floats on a yellow sound. The listeners, shown as circles and arcs, are covered in the sound but at the same time are focussing on the piano.
