Titled plaque to the frame Mark William Langlois was a 19th Century British painter. Langlois is known to have been born in Surrey to a father who engaged in various artistic occupations, such as goldsmith, watchmaker and art dealer. Langlois achieved some popularity with still life, landscape and genre scenes in watercolour and oil between 1862 and 1873, when he is known to have exhibited at the Royal Academy. There are newspaper reports in the 1870s and 80s of his paintings being auctioned by private collectors. Today his genre paintings in oil are still the most popular of his works at sales. Picture in very good condition, signed by the artist, no foxing or water damage. Frame good and sound with a few very small sections of wear and repair to bone inlay only. Ready to hang Alexei Vasilievich Hanzen (1876, Odessa – 1937, Dubrovnik) Fine and quick atmospheric watercolour in sepia. Signed to the lower left 'A.Hanzen' Alexei Hanzen was born in 1876 in the Black Sea port of Odessa. He was the grandson of the great marine painter Ivan Aivazovski, in whose studio he spent his youth learning the techniques of the master. After initial study in law, he took up his artistic education, studying in Fine Art academies in Berlin & Dresden. From there he continued on to Munich and later Paris, where he trained under Tony Robert-Fleury and Jules Lefebvre. Hanzen worked for a short period as a journalist and illustrator travelling to the Caucasus, Crimea, and the Balkans. Between 1904 and 1912 Hanzen was living in Germany, France, Italy, Netherlands, and Sweden. Significant artistic recognition came after 1907 with exhibitions in Florence, Berlin, and Paris. His works were very well regarded and in demand with pictures being shipped to Europe & America. In 1909 Hanzen travelled to the Crimea and to the Caucasus, and in the same year was appointed to the position of an official artist of the Naval Ministry. In 1910, owing to his art collecting and following on from the lead of his grandfather, he set up an art museum in Odessa. Hanzen's personal collection consisted of almost 400 works of art by artist including Aivazovsky, Vrubel, Roerich, Brodsky and etchings by Rembrandt. Hanzen moved to St. Petersburg in 1914, to the former estate of his grandfather. He was a regular visitor to his beloved Crimea, which inspired relentless painting in oil and particularly watercolour, as well as engraving. After the beginning of the First World War his main client became the War Office and, in 1915, Hanzen was transferred to serve in the navy Department, with an appointment for the admiralty. Following the Russian Revolution Hanzen emigrated to Croatia in 1920. He first moved to Zagreb, and then settled in Dubrovnik. During the 1920's he exhibited in Europe and internationally and painted actively until his death in 1937. Today, his works are on display in the Feodosia Art Gallery in Crimea and Odessa Art Museum, as well as in the Royal Collections of Italy, Croatia and Romania. He is best regarded for his lyrical landscapes of Crimea and Europe, and as a powerful force in 20th century Russian maritime art. Condition: Used Location Category: Antiques

Filippo Indoni (1842 -1908) was an Italian artist who specialized in watercolour and painted in the Realist style. He is best know for his Romantic and idealized portraits of country workers around Rome. His work shows these people with dignity and pride, happy and colourful. The paintings of Indoni are regarded for their high quality; fine attention to detail and luminous use of colour. The watercolours, of a man holding a stick and a woman with a basket, have great charm. Both subjects are happy and carefree, with smiles on their faces and colour in their dress. Each picture is signed and dated by the artist. Emily Eyres was a British portrait and genre painter who exhibited at the Royal Academy 1899-1904. Eyres is recorded as living in Walton on Thames during the period she was exhibiting at the R.A., her husband John W Eyres was a landscape artist and also exhibited at the R.A. Ready to hang We are very pleased to offer a grand unattributed Pre Raphaelite oil painting dating from the mid nineteenth century Titled 'A Call to Arms' it is a moving painting showing a country man preparing to undertake military duty during the English Civil War He is being dressed for battle by his children; with his son pulling tight the leather straps of his breastplate and his daughter sewing the lining to his helmet. He stands within his dwelling, his head is painted in profile, as he looks into the distance. The expression on his face is resolute but aware of the danger to come. The subject of the painting is in contrast to the rural idyll seen from the door. The painting dates from the mid nineteenth century. It is unsigned and without an attribution to an artist. It is very finely painted with great character, sharp contrasts in colour and fine detail. Set in superb carved richly gilded frame.
