Girl with a Pearl Earring was originally titled Girl with a Turban and it wasn't until the second half of the twentieth century that the name was changed. Regarded as Vermeer's masterpiece, this canvas is often referred to as the Mona Lisa of the North or the Dutch Mona Lisa. The girl in this painting is believed to be Vermeer's eldest daughter, Maria, who was about twelve or thirteen-years-old at the time it was created. Her facial features appear in several of Vermeer's works but his various techniques on his subject make it difficult to compare the female faces in his paintings, as the women are portrayed in different lighting conditions and poses. There is very little information about Vermeer and his paintings. Girl with a Pearl Earring is signed "IVMeer" but there is no date on this work. It remains unknown whether or not this canvas was commissioned and if so, by whom. It's more likely that this image was a tronie, Dutch 17th-century description of a 'head' painting that was not intended as a portrait. With this painting the viewer is captured by the subject and believes they have caught her attention and caused her to turn her head. This is a sensual painting with the girl gazing at the viewer with wide eyes and a parted mouth and there is an air of mystery surrounding her identity. In 1994 this canvas was restored which involved removing the yellowed varnish along with the retouches that had been made during previous restorations. This resulted in the vivid colours originally used by Vermeer shining through and the intimacy of the girl's gaze was also greatly enhanced. Girl with a Pearl Earring is Vermeer's most famous painting and one of the most recognisable pieces of art of all time. Vermeer mastered shadow and light in his work. He shows the softness of the girls' face, the playful reflection in her eyes and the glimmer of light in the pearl earring marking this as a striking and engaging piece. Completed in 1665, this is not a portrait but a "tronie"- the figure is a figment of Vermeer's imagination. Tronies usually depict a character, in this case a girl who is wearing a fashionable, exotic dress and wears an oriental turban and most importantly, a large pearl in her ear. Title: Edward Hopper Limited Edition "Nighthawks" One of Only 75 Published Description: 9878 - "Nighthawks" limited edition by the renowned American artist Edward Hopper. This is one of only 75 published Worldwide, numbered in the frank. NOTE: This limited edition will be supplied with a signed certificate of authenticity (signed by the Master Printer) and a replacement valuation for £1500 along with biographical details on the artist and the image. (Free of charge) Excellent condition. Image size approx 51cm x 100cm. "Nighthawks" was painted in 1942 by Edward Hopper. The subject portrays people sitting in a downtown diner late at night. It is, undoubtedly, Hopper's most famous work and is one of the most recognisable paintings in American art. Within months of its completion, it was sold to the Art Institute of Chicago for the sum of $3000, where it still hangs. According to Hopper's wife, Josephine, the painting was finished on the 21st January and her handwritten notes include the interesting possibility that the painting's evocative title may have had its origins as a reference to the beak-shaped nose of the man at the bar. She also said that Edward had posed for the two figures himself of the men, using a mirror, and he used his wife, Josephine, for the girl. The painting took around six weeks to complete. There is a possibility that Hopper was inspired by Vincent van Gogh's "Night Cafe" which was being exhibited in New York at the time he painted this painting. No-one has clearly and safely identified the site of the painting but it is thought to have been at Mulry Square which is the intersection of Seventh Avenue South, Greenwich Avenue and West 11th Street, which was some seven blocks from Hopper's studio on Washington Square. This artwork is in mint condition. Mondrian was born in Holland in 1872 and was determined to become a painter from a young age. He qualified with a teaching degree in 1892, but enrolled for painting lessons, before moving to Amsterdam and registering at the Rijksacademie. Mondrian became a member of the art society Kunstliefde "Art Lovers" in Utrecht, where his first paintings were exhibited in 1893. He experimented with many different styles including naturalistic, impressionist and painting many landscapes of his native country. In 1911 he moved to Paris and the influence of Cubism, as evidenced by Picasso and Braque, started to appear almost immediately in his work. He spent the duration of the First World War back in Holland and continued his journey towards abstraction. After the War had finished Mondrian returned to France. He then moved to London in 1938 but relocated to New York just two years later in 1940, where he remained until his death. Mondrian is well known for his contribution to the development of modern abstract art. He strove to portray an extreme 'formal purity' through his combination of simplistic straight lines and bold primary colours. The Image: Mondrian spent the period 1914-1918 (World War I) back at his home in Holland and during this time, he decided to work on an abstract art form which was later classified as 'Neoplastic style'. This work was depicted by lighter colours, simplified colour selection and forms that were balanced in their composition. This work is a result of Mondrian joining the abstraction-creation line which was open to new styles, new techniques and at this time Mondrian began to be fascinated with the idea of the line and dismantling the very definition of painting. He argued that drawing and draughtsmanship which were exemplified in the line, had always lain at the heart of painting from the Renaissance artists to the Impressionists to the Modernists and no one had ever thought to challenge that. Each print in this edition has been hand sorted and fully inspected by the Master Printer. This high quality edition was published on acid-free calcium carbonate-buffered stock paper, mould-made from 100% cotton and printed with light fast inks. Picasso did not like musical instruments particularly, and nor did he play one. Yet despite this distaste, instruments, and in particular the guitar which became a favourite cipher, are among his most regular subjects. By the beginning of the 20th century the apparently faithful recording Jens of photography made realist painting feel redundant to many artists. Searching for a new methodology Picasso and Georges Braque experimented with a means of translating what they saw into a unique and personal visual language. They combined what became the Cubist movement with a shift away from the usual subjects of traditional Salon paintings such as landscapes and elevated portraiture to simple still lifes redolent of daily life. By restricting the eye to a group of objects, Picasso and Braque embarked on a tightly focused dialogue together. These still lifes, with flourishes of words and newsprint and often reusing objects such as: a stringed instrument, a glass, or a spoon, were fresh on Picasso's mind when, he moved beyond the Neoclassicism of the post-war 'rappel a l'ordre' and began to reinvent his Cubist style. As he returned repeatedly to the guitar as a subject, certain elements shift and start to take on a life of their own. This painting gives a glimpse of the next phase of Picasso's ever-changing genius, with the composition presenting an inherent sense of playfulness in their manipulation of the object. This notion was explored increasingly in the mid 1920s and later as the artist began to explore surrealism more intently, and evolved the extraordinary sequence of near metamorphic bathers. His talent for painting was clear from an early age, but he never considered pursuing a career as an artist. Instead he entered the banking profession and continued to enjoy painting as a hobby. By the mid 1980s however, Henderson had become convinced that art meant more to him than banking! In 1986 he moved to London in order to study painting, and to make his passion his profession. He has never looked back and now paints full time in his London studio. A seasoned traveller, Henderson has spent time in Europe, Australia and of course his native South America. While he loves the ocean and has always found it a source of inspiration and joy, he is also a true city-dweller, and many of his most inspirational works feature scenes from the world's most beautiful cities. Painting in acrylic, oil or watercolour on canvas, Henderson's trademark palette utilises cool, soft tones to convey the atmosphere of his subject. His works are regularly displayed in London galleries and at international art fairs. One of a rare 95 edition published Worldwide. Superbly framed in a hand finished bespoke frame and mounted to a high standard. "Sleep" is a 1937 painting by artist Salvador Dali, and is one of his most recognizable works. The painting is a visual rendering of the body's collapse into sleep, as if it was a collapse into a separate condition of being. Against a deep blue summer sky, a huge disembodied head with eyes dissolved in sleep, hangs suspended over an almost bare landscape. The head is "soft", vulnerable and distorted. And what should be a neck tapers away to drop limply over a crutch. A dog appears on the left, its head in a crutch too, as if half asleep itself. The head is supported above land by a series of wooden crutches. The mouth, nose and also eyes are all held in place by the crutches, suggesting that the head might collapse if they were removed. Crutches are a familiar motif in Dali's works. As Dali attests in his book, The Secret Life of Salvador Dali, "I have often imagined the monster of sleep as a heavy, giant head with a tapering body held up by the crutches of reality.
