This is one of only 75 published Worldwide, numbered in the frank. NOTE: This limited edition will be supplied with a signed certificate of authenticity (signed by the Master Printer) and a replacement valuation for £1200 along with biographical details on the artist and the image. (Free of charge) Excellent condition. Image size approx 51cm x 100cm. "Nighthawks" was painted in 1942 by Edward Hopper. The subject portrays people sitting in a downtown diner late at night. It is, undoubtedly, Hopper's most famous work and is one of the most recognisable paintings in American art. Within months of its completion, it was sold to the Art Institute of Chicago for the sum of $3000, where it still hangs. According to Hopper's wife, Josephine, the painting was finished on the 21st January and her handwritten notes include the interesting possibility that the painting's evocative title may have had its origins as a reference to the beak-shaped nose of the man at the bar. She also said that Edward had posed for the two figures himself of the men, using a mirror, and he used his wife, Josephine, for the girl. The painting took around six weeks to complete. There is a possibility that Hopper was inspired by Vincent van Gogh's "Night Café" which was being exhibited in New York at the time he painted this painting. No-one has clearly and safely identified the site of the painting but it is thought to have been at Mulry Square which is the intersection of Seventh Avenue South, Greenwich Avenue and West 11th Street, which was some seven blocks from Hopper's studio on Washington Square. The original sold at auction in 2021 for £2,556,000. The Auction – the jostling, gladiatorial melee in which a falling hammer decides the fate of pictures, objects, country houses or livestock – changed forever in the 1950s, largely due to Peter Wilson’s va-va-voom. Big money and marketing minds got involved. Which is why LS Lowry’s masterpiece The Auction (1958) is such a fascinating picture: it shows us what was about to change. This, in fact, was Lowry’s great subject: the elegiac qualities of the communal moment. Those shared occasions which would soon become steeped in nostalgia. “People think crowds are all the same,” he once remarked, “But they’re not, you know, everyone’s different.” He detailed those differences across works that embraced football matches, Christmas sales and race meets. Gerry Baptists paintings convey an immediate frisson; he creates landscape and figure studies in vibrant colour possessing a natural talent for composition. His paintings are startling in their effectiveness, having a clarity, vivaciousness coupled with a powerful vision. Born in India in 1935 of British/Portuguese parents, Baptists artistic education began at home; his father a musician, writer and artist, his mother, drawn to nature. Baptist likely gets his insatiable curiosity in life from his bohemian upbringing. "Our home was just a chaos of music, books and art - it was like living in a wild flower garden where everything was allowed to thrive." Later, the family moved to England, where he finished schooling before studying painting and graphics at Walthamstow School of Art and The London College of Printing and Graphic Art, eventually joining an advertising agency as an Art Director. Throughout this time his love of painting continued- after working he often created large scale abstracts well into the night. His inquiring mind led Baptist to be an early adopter of digital technology, it permitted a new freedom, something he relished. He was drawn to the art of those that forged their own paths, such as Willem de Kooning, Philip Guston and Pablo Picasso. He marries influences from Expressionism, Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art and even Graphic Art and Comics into his work. Colour and excitement pour out of his paintings with a cheerful brilliance and perhaps an unconscious link with his early years in India or simply an attraction to the joy and colour he finds around him on a daily basis. His garden landscapes, a vibrant celebration of the good and the beautiful, touch on the more pressing topic of what we could lose if we do not care for the Earth. His figurative work also address the big issues, exploring greed, consumerism and morality. Masterful in his approach to producing joyful, indulgent and mesmerising pieces, Baptist challenges the status quo and, ultimately, the viewer. This rare very high quality Limited Edition Print on paper was published with light-fast inks to BS1006 standard onto acid-free, calcium carbonate-buffered stock, mould-made from 100% cotton. The detail and quality of this rare print is outstanding. Following the atomic explosion over Hiroshima in 1945, Dali painted a number of fragmented heads and figures. Some of the shapes that form the head in this painting are solid and phallic shaped - inspired by rhinoceros horns. The upper area of the painting, with the halo and brown clouds resembles photographs of atomic explosions. The female face, with its tender expression and thin halo, is recognisable as the face of a Madonna by Raphael. Dali was a great admirer of renaissance Old Masters, Da Vinci and Raphael to be specific. The skull section in this work is based upon the inside of the dome of the Pantheon building in Rome. Dali has fragmented the head to show how the sense of order from the past, illustrated by the balance and reason of a classical icon, has been shattered by the advent of nuclear weapons. The motif of the shattered head was a common one amongst artists in the post-war years. This reflects the emotional turmoil of a period when nuclear war seemed like a reality, following the use of nuclear weapons in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. In this context, the delicate halo of the Madonna now suggests a nuclear mushroom cloud and her expression, with eyes downcast in prayer, seems particularly appropriate. Answer, for me, there was nobody around me to paint as I wanted it to be. Born in 1962, the 28th of November in Tehran/Iran, in a modest family of 8, resident in Brussels/Belgium since 1985. First he did 3 successful years in Medicine but after 3 years he gave up. It was 1989 and he joined the royal fine arts academy (painting) where he was finally graduated in 2006 although he was not there for a graduation paper but only a need for a place to work on living models. The first disformation appeared quite soon (1992), from then on, his art works present a high tendencies towards the “Quatumanisme” where he is the pioneer. His published book presents the manifestation of it, with many exhibitions all around Europe during 30 years hard work. “I have the passion for art painting all my life and more!” He says. He was born in Salerno in 1928 not far from the Amalfi Coast and began painting in the wake of the Posillipo School, following the road marked by the Dutch Pitloo, Giacinto Gigante and the Palizzi brothers. In 1949 he completed his studies begun with Della Rocca in Cava dei Tirreni and in 1956 he moved to Turin where he came into contact with new cultures, Milan, Paris, Barcelona, Picasso and the new trends in contemporary art. From impressionism in "plein aire" to the post-impressionism of the Fauves, to the experiences of abstract art and informal art. His works are present in many Italian and foreign collections (United States, Canada, Australia, Germany, Switzerland, France). He is the Founder and President of the S. Rita International Academy. His painting moves within suggestive intuitions of aesthetic renewal, in a continuous and sensitive personal research, his themes extend over fields of various values: space, life, nature, mysticism. Always aimed at the effort of a construction, alert, without intimistic excesses and dangerous alienations. In his compositions, colour penetrates visual reality, making it thicker, becoming both reality and event at the same time. Farina sometimes resorts to different solutions using collages, strips of coloured cardboard, strips of masonite, plastic plates, silver papers, assemblages of canvases, all subjected to the need for a painting that is still colour. In this way, each composition acquires a highly individual key and becomes a reason for meditation for the viewer. This high quality edition was published on acid-free calcium carbonate-buffered stock paper, mould-made from 100% cotton and printed with light fast inks. Picasso did not like musical instruments particularly, and nor did he play one. Yet despite this distaste, instruments, and in particular the guitar which became a favourite cipher, are among his most regular subjects. By the beginning of the 20th century the apparently faithful recording Jens of photography made realist painting feel redundant to many artists. Searching for a new methodology Picasso and Georges Braque experimented with a means of translating what they saw into a unique and personal visual language. They combined what became the Cubist movement with a shift away from the usual subjects of traditional Salon paintings such as landscapes and elevated portraiture to simple still lifes redolent of daily life. By restricting the eye to a group of objects, Picasso and Braque embarked on a tightly focused dialogue together. These still lifes, with flourishes of words and newsprint and often reusing objects such as: a stringed instrument, a glass, or a spoon, were fresh on Picasso's mind when, he moved beyond the Neoclassicism of the post-war 'rappel a l'ordre' and began to reinvent his Cubist style. As he returned repeatedly to the guitar as a subject, certain elements shift and start to take on a life of their own. This painting gives a glimpse of the next phase of Picasso's ever-changing genius, with the composition presenting an inherent sense of playfulness in their manipulation of the object. This notion was explored increasingly in the mid 1920s and later as the artist began to explore surrealism more intently, and evolved the extraordinary sequence of near metamorphic bathers.
