World wide About the Artists and the ART Gilbert Prousch, sometimes referred to as Gilbert Proesch (born 17 September 1943 in San Martin de Tor, Italy), and George Passmore (born 8 January 1942 in Plymouth), are two artists who work together as the collaborative art duo Gilbert & George. They are known for their distinctive and highly formal appearance and manner in performance art, and also for their brightly coloured graphic-style photo-based artworks. The artists celebrated their 50th anniversary in April 2023, Gilbert & George opened the Gilbert & George Centre in Heneage Street, London E1 to showcase their work in regular exhibitions and to secure their legacy. The pair are perhaps best known for their large scale photo works, known as The Pictures. The early work in this style is in black and white, later with hand-painted red and yellow touches. The Street Graffitti art was sprayed when Banksy visited New Orleans, three years after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. There, Banksy used the still-tattered urban fabric of New Orleans as an eloquent backdrop for his critique of the situation. Banksy painted Abraham Lincoln as a homeless man, pushing a trolley full of goods, using the same stencil he would employ for these works on cardboard. The building upon which Banksy had painted his image of Lincoln has since been demolished to make way for a healthcare facility. Banksy has taken the famed face of œHonest Abe and transformed him into a ghoulish, comical presence. Additional to the Street Graff art, Banksy sprayed three card art pieces.
