Artist Biography: Gerry Baptist's paintings convey an immediate frisson; he creates landscape and figure studies in vibrant colour possessing a natural talent for composition. His paintings are startling in their effectiveness, having a clarity, vivaciousness coupled with a powerful vision. Born in India in 1935 of British/Portuguese parents, Baptist's artistic education began at home; his father a musician, writer and artist, his mother, drawn to nature. Baptist likely gets his insatiable curiosity in life from his bohemian upbringing. "Our home was just a chaos of music, books and art - it was like living in a wild flower garden where everything was allowed to thrive." Later, the family moved to England, where he finished schooling before studying painting and graphics at Walthamstow School of Art and The London College of Printing and Graphic Art, eventually joining an advertising agency as an Art Director. Throughout this time his love of painting continued- after working he often created large scale abstracts well into the night. His inquiring mind led Baptist to be an early adopter of digital technology, it permitted a new freedom, something he relished. He was drawn to the art of those that forged their own paths, such as Willem de Kooning, Philip Guston and Pablo Picasso. He marries influences from Expressionism, Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art and even Graphic Art and Comics into his work. Colour and excitement pour out of his paintings with a cheerful brilliance and perhaps an unconscious link with his early years in India or simply an attraction to the joy and colour he finds around him on a daily basis. His garden landscapes, a vibrant celebration of the good and the beautiful, touch on the more pressing topic of what we could lose if we do not care for the Earth. His figurative work also address the big issues, exploring greed, consumerism and morality. Composed in 1923, whilst on holiday in Antibes, France, The Pipes of Pan is the crowning achievement of Picasso's neoclassical period of the 1920s. The Pipes of Pan is regarded as the most important painting of this period, not only because of its theme, but also because it draws upon classical interpretations of art in a new and modern style. This monumental painting depicts a mythological scene, set in the Mediterranean, in which two classical figures stare out towards a lost Arcadia, Pans homeland. The figures are heavy, sculptural and contemplative. In the painting Picasso transforms Pan, the ancient Greek god of shepherds and flocks who has the hind legs and horns of a goat, into a young boy. Picasso's Pan reveals none of the laziness or lustiness of the original Greek god. The origins of Pans pipes lie in the ancient Greek tale of Syrinx, who was pursued by the amorous Pan and chased into a river, whereby she turned into a hollow reed. Pan then cut the reeds and fashioned them into the first musical pipes. Throughout Picasso's many periods of transition, he would often refer to various mythological figures, one of the most famous being the Minotaur. The primary colours on the painting feature squares, circles and triangles. The piece can actually be divided in half, with the left side featuring rectangles, squares and straight lines in bright colours while the right side features darker colours in various abstract shapes. The original two-meter-wide painting consists of several main forms: a vertical yellow triangle, an inclined red cross and a large dark blue circle; a multitude of straight (or sinuous) black lines, circular arcs, monochromatic circles and scattered, coloured checkerboards contribute to its delicate complexity. Like the Post-Impressionists, Lowry was interested in recording the nuances of everyday life, basing his work on observations of the world around him. Inspired by the industrial scenes in his hometown, Lowry would stop and sketch during the day then develop a painting such as Street Scene at home. His direct and distinctive style led art critic Jonathan Jones to call Lowry a ‚'Modern primitive' to be ranked alongside such artists as Henri Rousseau. A fan of its stiff consistency, Lowry painted with oil paints all of his life, using the paint straight from the tube. Just as Lowry was fascinated by capturing the quotidian, he was also quite elemental in his choice of materials. Born in 1895, Boris Smirnoff was largely inspired by the 1900s and 1910s. The dynamic development of pictorial art defined the first decades of the twentieth century. It was an era of experimentation and post-Impressionism, with artists first delving into Expressionism and Abstraction. Many different collectives and communities of artists across the world evolved many ways of expressing these crucial innovations. The Fauves are widely considered to be the first major Post-Impressionist group working at the start of the twentieth century. Including artists such as Henry Matisse within their ranks, the Fauves believed that vivid, other worldly colours and vibrant brushstrokes were a key component of their work. During this same time period a young Pablo Picasso, still in his youth, created his famous Blue and Rose periods in Paris, and by the end of the 1920s he had established the initial ideas of portraying fractured views of reality alongside his contemporary Georges Braque. This movement became known as Analytical Cubism. The De Stijl group in the Netherlands, under the leadership of Piet Mondrian, started to practice important theories about Abstraction. Alongside this, Kasimir Malevich and his contemporaries developed Constructivism and Suprematism in the Soviet Union. These radical styles of art were demanding and politicised, and looked to serve a new world order. The first twenty years of the 20th century can be considered to be the most prolific, and are noted as the era in art history when modern and modernist ideas first began to take hold culturally. Mechanisation in production and ideas of order and rationality ensured the discipline of architecture to develop at an extraordinary rate, and was defined by in the work of Le Corbusier and Gerrit Rietveld. Bauhaus was prevalent at this time and defined the idea of a common discipline across all types of creative art. Most, if not all, of the ideologies of important art movements that we associate with modern and contemporary art can be traced back to the diverse range of work made during this era. The psychological applications of art began to be further explored and developed following the terrors of the WWI. Dadaism, a nonsensical and absurdist movement inspired directly by the war, sprung up in Paris, Berlin, Zurich and Hannover, and launched the careers of artists such as Marcel Duchamp, Francis Picabia, Hannah H and Kurt Schwitters. The essential philosophies behind Dadaism would go on to find ground in Surrealism, which was the first art movement to fully integrate psychology and ideas about the subconscious, and took great inspiration from the work of Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung. At the same time, Expressive painting was being further established and explored in various places around the world. the Nabis in France were the first to truly explore this movement at the turn of the century, and German groups such as Die Brucke and Der Blaue Reiter soon followed suit, developing the careers of legendary artists such as Kirchner, Franz Marc, and Wassily Kandinsky.. In this picture Temptation appears to Saint Anthony successively in the form of a horse in the foreground representing strength, sometimes also the symbol of voluptuousness, and in the form of the elephant which follows it, carrying on its back the golden cup of lust in which a nude woman is standing precariously balanced on the fragile pedestal, a figure which emphasizes the erotic character of the composition. The other elephants are carrying buildings on their back; the first of these is an obelisk inspired by that of Bernini in Rome, the second and third are Venetian edifices in the style of Paladio. In the background another elephant carries a tall tower which is not without phallic overtones and in the clouds one can glimpse a few fragments of the Escorial, symbol of temporal and spiritual order. This painting was painted in the studio that the artist occupied for a few days next to the Colony Restaurant in New York. It is the first and the only time that he participated in a contest. It was an invitational artistic competition for a painting on the theme of the temptation of Saint Anthony, organized in 1946 by the Loew Lewin Company, a movie-producing firm. The winning picture was to figure in a film taken from the story "Bel Ami" by Maupassant. Eleven painters took part in the competition, among them Dali, Paul Delaux, Max Ernst. Portrait of 'Adele Bloch-Bauer I' is a 1907 painting by Gustav Klimt. According to press reports it was sold for US$135 million to Ronald Lauder for his Neue Galerie in New York City in June 2006, which made it at that time the most expensive painting. Klimt took three years to complete the painting. It measures 54" x 54" [138 x 138 cm] and is made of oil and gold on canvas, showing elaborate and complex ornamentation as seen in the Jugendstil style. Klimt was a member of the Vienna Secession, a group of artists that broke away from the traditional way of painting. The picture was painted in Vienna and commissioned by Ferdinand Bloch-Bauer who was a banker and who married Adele when she was 18 and he was 35. Sadly, their three children all died at birth and Adele died in 1925. As a wealthy industrialist who had made his fortune in the sugar industry, he sponsored the arts and favoured and supported Gustav Klimt. Adele Bloch-Bauer became the only model who was painted twice by Klimt when he completed a second picture of her, Adele Bloch-Bauer II, in 1912. The picture was only returned to its rightful owner, Adele's niece, Maria Altmann, in 2006. Maria, who fled occupied Austria to the USA with her husband (saved by ransom from Dachau) remembered her aunt well 'I never saw her smile. She was always very serious and wore flowing white dresses and carried a gold cigarette holder when it was very unusual for women to smoke. She had a salon rather than ladies tea parties.'. Title: "The Fever Van" Limited Edition by L.S. Lowry. Description: 9590 - Limited edition by L.S. Lowry titled "The Fever Van" This is one from the edition of only 75 published Worldwide. Supplied complete with a certificate of authenticity, signed by the "Master Printer" and a replacement valuation of ¬£1650, both free of charge. Professionally mounted. Excellent condition. It shows an ambulance arriving to collect a patient from a small terraced house. The sufferer probably has diphtheria or scarlet fever, both highly contagious diseases and widespread in industrial Britain in the 1930s. A lack of vaccinations meant that such diseases were frequently fatal. Lowry's treatment of the theme avoids excessive sentimentality; he goes for a distant view of the ambulance and the crowd gathered around it rather than a close-up of the drama. He was clearly interested in the effect of accidents on the urban scene and once said: "Accidents interest me - I have a very queer mind you know. What fascinates me is the people they attract. The patterns those people form, and the atmosphere of tension when something has happened ¶ Where there's a quarrel there's always a crowd ¶ It's a great draw. A quarrel or a body." Lowry is often characterised as a self-taught artist, but despite the apparent naivety of his work, drawing was always the foundation of his paintings. The cropped edges of "The Fever Van" give a feeling of incompleteness to the scene, suggesting the ephemeral and fragmentary character of life in industrial towns. In "The Fever Van" the red of the houses in the foreground contrasts with the greyish blue of the church in the distance. The smoke from the chimney on the left-hand side casts a shadow onto the walls opposite, serving as a visual metaphor for the all-pervasive smog of industrial Salford. Lowry's painting of figures is almost abstract because of the elimination of details. He once said: " Natural figures would have broken the spell of it, so I made them half unreal ¶ Had I drawn them as they are, it would not have looked like a vision ¶ I have been called a painter of Manchester work people. But my figures are not exactly that, they are ghostly figures¶ which seems to me so beautiful, they are symbols of my mind. They are myself.". The detail and quality of this rare print is outstanding. Following the atomic explosion over Hiroshima in 1945, Dali painted a number of fragmented heads and figures. Some of the shapes that form the head in this painting are solid and phallic shaped - inspired by rhinoceros horns. The upper area of the painting, with the halo and brown clouds resembles photographs of atomic explosions. The female face, with its tender expression and thin halo, is recognisable as the face of a Madonna by Raphael. Dali was a great admirer of renaissance Old Masters, Da Vinci and Raphael to be specific. The skull section in this work is based upon the inside of the dome of the Pantheon building in Rome. Dali has fragmented the head to show how the sense of order from the past, illustrated by the balance and reason of a classical icon, has been shattered by the advent of nuclear weapons. The motif of the shattered head was a common one amongst artists in the post-war years. This reflects the emotional turmoil of a period when nuclear war seemed like a reality, following the use of nuclear weapons in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. In this context, the delicate halo of the Madonna now suggests a nuclear mushroom cloud and her expression, with eyes downcast in prayer, seems particularly appropriate.. Born in 1974 in Perugia, the son of the renowned Italian artist Antonio Tamburro, Marco studied art, furniture design and architecture at the Istituto Arte, Perugia where he graduated from with Honours in Art and Furniture in 1994. Marco wished to continue his studies and moved to Milan where he went on to further study at the brera academy of fine arts where he got interested in theatre set design and photography, before making a permanent move to Rome where he graduated from the Rome Academy of Fine Arts in 1999. He has had solo exhibitions in Roma, Udine and Edinburgh, and collective exhibitions in Bari, Viareggio, Venezia, Bologna, Cannes, Padua and New York and Mexico City. His interests in theatre and photography are dominant in his work and he is forever with a paint brush or camera in hand photographing everything from derelict buildings to everyday people rushing past in the streets, to the multitude of statues and fountains of his adopted city which he then recreates as a collage on canvas from his attic studio apartment overlooking many of Romes famous historical attractions.
