The title is "The Maximum Speed of Raphael's Madonna, 1954" It is framed in a bespoke frame with special art mount and the quality of this print is superb. This limited edition will be supplied with a signed certificate of authenticity (signed by the Master Printer) and a replacement valuation for £2000 along with biographical details on the artist (free of charge). Salvador Dali's interest in new scientific discoveries, particularly quantum physics and nuclear physics, is key to the works he produced in this time period. In Confesiones inconfesables (The Unspeakable Confessions, Bruguera, 1975) he recalled how "the atomic explosion from 6 August 1945 had seismically shaken me. From that moment on, the atom was my favourite subject of reflection." In the same decade, the 1940s, this new fascination was combined with the artist moving closer to the Catholic religion, along with a return to Academic Art by virtue of themes that drew inspiration from Western tradition, such as the Renaissance in Italy, and the Golden Age in Spain. Both influences together would give rise to the so-called "atomic period", and the publication of Manifiesto M√≠stico (Mystic Manifesto, 1951), where Dal√≠ explained the symbiosis that had lead him to the mystic-nuclear: "Every quarter of an hour and quarter of a second matter is in a constant and accelerated process of dematerialisation and disintegration, slipping through the grasp of the wise and showing us spirituality in all substance. In Maximum Speed of Raphael's Madonna the artist borrows the image of a Madonna by Raphael Sanzio, one of the great masters of the Renaissance and hugely admired by Dal√≠. The work synthesises great classical tradition through the theme of religion with the discoveries and experiences of modern art, engendering an image built from an interpretation of the theoretical principles of physics and art's visual possibilities. The face of the Virgin breaks up into spheres, geometrically perfect figures, and into forms resembling rhinoceros horns as Dal√≠ unearths logarithmic spiral forms based on the pattern of Divine Proportion. The dynamic movement of the elements is joined by the discontinuity of the matter, linking this work to the process of atomic disintegration.. In this picture Temptation appears to Saint Anthony successively in the form of a horse in the foreground representing strength, sometimes also the symbol of voluptuousness, and in the form of the elephant which follows it, carrying on its back the golden cup of lust in which a nude woman is standing precariously balanced on the fragile pedestal, a figure which emphasizes the erotic character of the composition. The other elephants are carrying buildings on their back; the first of these is an obelisk inspired by that of Bernini in Rome, the second and third are Venetian edifices in the style of Paladio. In the background another elephant carries a tall tower which is not without phallic overtones and in the clouds one can glimpse a few fragments of the Escorial, symbol of temporal and spiritual order. This painting was painted in the studio that the artist occupied for a few days next to the Colony Restaurant in New York. It is the first and the only time that he participated in a contest. It was an invitational artistic competition for a painting on the theme of the temptation of Saint Anthony, organized in 1946 by the Loew Lewin Company, a movie-producing firm. The winning picture was to figure in a film taken from the story "Bel Ami" by Maupassant. Eleven painters took part in the competition, among them Dali, Paul Delaux, Max Ernst. Title: Joan Miro "Femme Oiseaux 1976" Rare Limited Edition Description: 8911 - Rare Limited Edition by the world famous Spanish artist Joan Miro (1893-1983) titled "Femme, Oiseaux, 1976". Femme, Oiseaux is one of several paintings on the poetic theme of women, birds and the night which was a common subject for Miro in the 1960s and 70s. American Painting, Miro admitted, had showed me a direction I wanted to take but which up to then had remained at the stage of an unfulfilled desire. In addition to this, a visit to Japan in 1966 for a retrospective of his work held in Tokyo allowed Miro to meet with Japanese poets, potters and calligraphers whose art he had always admired. In particular, as he recalled of this visit, I was fascinated by the work of the Japanese calligraphers and it definitely influenced my own working methods. I work more and more in a state of trance, I would say almost always in a trance these days. And I consider my painting more and more gestural. As Miros work of the 1960s progressed he became freer and more at ease with his working process. Similarly, as a work such as Femme, Oiseaux demonstrates, as a direct result of this practice, Miros forms grew more open and expansive, his gestural lines more dramatic and flowing while the poetic nature and integrity of his pictorial vocabulary remained essentially the same. Segregated into distinct fields of pure colour, .the smooth flowing calligraphic lines of Miros powerful glyph-like imagery also signify strongly the transient path and process of their own creation.. The painting depicts a moody Irwell Valley and its smoke-polluted atmosphere against an industrial background. The fences look like blood-red coloured tombstones dotted around and the telegraph poles are reminiscent of crucifixes. The water in the middle ground looks dirty and stagnant with an abandoned half-sunken boat to the left. On the left shore there are men queuing for work at a time when jobs were few and far between. On the far left is Agecroft Colliery, which was opened in 1844 but had to close in 1932 with a great loss of jobs. Lowry has intertwined churches and the town hall with the mill chimneys, which spew out black polluting smoke; it is an interesting juxtaposition of industrial architecture and residential buildings.. "Sleep" is a 1937 painting by artist Salvador Dal√≠, and is one of his most recognizable works. The painting is a visual rendering of the body's collapse into sleep, as if it was a collapse into a separate condition of being. Against a deep blue summer sky, a huge disembodied head with eyes dissolved in sleep, hangs suspended over an almost bare landscape. The head is "soft", vulnerable and distorted. And what should be a neck tapers away to drop limply over a crutch. A dog appears on the left, its head in a crutch too, as if half asleep itself. The head is supported above land by a series of wooden crutches. The mouth, nose and also eyes are all held in place by the crutches, suggesting that the head might collapse if they were removed. Crutches are a familiar motif in Dali's works. As Dali attests in his book, The Secret Life of Salvador Dali, "I have often imagined the monster of sleep as a heavy, giant head with a tapering body held up by the crutches of reality. According to press reports it was sold for US$135 million to Ronald Lauder for his Neue Galerie in New York City in June 2006, which made it at that time the most expensive painting. Klimt took three years to complete the painting. It measures 54" x 54" [138 x 138 cm] and is made of oil and gold on canvas, showing elaborate and complex ornamentation as seen in the Jugendstil style. Klimt was a member of the Vienna Secession, a group of artists that broke away from the traditional way of painting. The picture was painted in Vienna and commissioned by Ferdinand Bloch-Bauer who was a banker and who married Adele when she was 18 and he was 35. Sadly, their three children all died at birth and Adele died in 1925. As a wealthy industrialist who had made his fortune in the sugar industry, he sponsored the arts and favoured and supported Gustav Klimt. Adele Bloch-Bauer became the only model who was painted twice by Klimt when he completed a second picture of her, Adele Bloch-Bauer II, in 1912. The picture was only returned to its rightful owner, Adele's niece, Maria Altmann, in 2006. Maria, who fled occupied Austria to the USA with her husband (saved by ransom from Dachau) remembered her aunt well 'I never saw her smile. She was always very serious and wore flowing white dresses and carried a gold cigarette holder when it was very unusual for women to smoke. She had a salon rather than ladies tea parties.'. It has been professionally mounted and framed. Mondrian was born in Holland in 1872 and was determined to become a painter from a young age. He qualified with a teaching degree in 1892, but enrolled for painting lessons, before moving to Amsterdam and registering at the Rijksacademie. Mondrian became a member of the art society Kunstliefde "Art Lovers" in Utrecht, where his first paintings were exhibited in 1893. He experimented with many different styles including naturalistic, impressionist and painting many landscapes of his native country. In 1911 he moved to Paris and the influence of Cubism, as evidenced by Picasso and Braque, started to appear almost immediately in his work. He spent the duration of the First World War back in Holland and continued his journey towards abstraction. After the War had finished Mondrian returned to France. He strove to portray an extreme 'formal purity' through his combination of simplistic straight lines and bold primary colours. The Image: Mondrian spent the period 1914-1918 (World War I) back at his home in Holland and during this time, he decided to work on an abstract art form which was later classified as 'Neoplastic style'. This work was depicted by lighter colours, simplified colour selection and forms that were balanced in their composition. This work is a result of Mondrian joining the abstraction-creation line which was open to new styles, new techniques and at this time Mondrian began to be fascinated with the idea of the line and dismantling the very definition of painting. Girl with a Pearl Earring was originally titled Girl with a Turban and it wasn't until the second half of the twentieth century that the name was changed. Regarded as Vermeer's masterpiece, this canvas is often referred to as the Mona Lisa of the North or the Dutch Mona Lisa. The girl in this painting is believed to be Vermeer's eldest daughter, Maria, who was about twelve or thirteen-years-old at the time it was created. Her facial features appear in several of Vermeer's works but his various techniques on his subject make it difficult to compare the female faces in his paintings, as the woman are portrayed in different lighting conditions and poses. There is very little information about Vermeer and his paintings. Girl with a Pearl Earring is signed "IVMeer" but there is no date on this work. It remains unknown whether or not this canvas was commissioned and if so, by whom. It's more likely that this image was a tronie, Dutch 17th-century description of a 'head' painting that was not intended as a portrait. With this painting the viewer is captured by the subject and believes they have caught her attention and caused her to turn her head. This is a sensual painting with the girl gazing at the viewer with wide eyes and a parted mouth and there is an air of mystery surrounding her identity. In 1994 this canvas was restored which involved removing the yellowed varnish along with the retouches that had been made during previous restorations. This resulted in the vivid colours originally used by Vermeer shining through and the intimacy of the girl's gaze was also greatly enhanced. Girl with a Pearl Earring is Vermeer's most famous painting and one of the most recognisable pieces of art of all time. Vermeer mastered shadow and light in his work. He shows the softness of the girls' face, the playful reflection in her eyes and the glimmer of light in the pearl earring marking this as a striking and engaging piece. Completed in 1665, this is not a portrait but a "tronie"- the figure is a figment of Vermeer's imagination. Tronies usually depict a character, in this case a girl who is wearing a fashionable, exotic dress and wears an oriental turban and most importantly, a large pearl in her ear.. The Rue Montorgueil is often thought to depict a 14 July celebration, in fact it was painted on 30 June 1878 for a festival declared that year by the government celebrating "peace and work". This was one of the events organised for the third Universal Exhibition in Paris a few weeks after it opened, and intended to be a symbol of Frances recovery after the defeat of the 1870 Franco-Prussian War. As well as demonstrating nationalist enthusiasm, the celebrations of 30 June 1878 were also an opportunity to strengthen the position of the Republican regime. It was two years later, in 1880, that 14 July was designated the French National Day. This painting proposes a distanced vision of an urban landscape by a painter who did not mix with the crowd, but observed it from a window. The three colours of blue, white and red vibrating in Monet's painting are those of modern France. The impressionist technique, with its multitude of small strokes of colour, suggests the animation of the crowd and the wavering of flags. The flags along Rue Montorgueil look fine when you first glance at the painting, but not if you look directly at them, or after you study the details carefully. This effect is called illusory conjunction. The paintings spatial imprecision is not so noticeable at first because our own spatial imprecision allows illusory conjunctions to complete the objects. It was painted in 1941, when Dali was mid-career and writing his semi-autobiography 'The Secret Life of Salvador Dali'. Keeping the facial features of the original magazine cover, Dali metamorphosed the portrait into a coastal landscape using overpainting techniques. The title translates to 'Mysterious Mouth Appearing Behind My Nurse's Back'. Alluding to his childhood memories, the painting depicts Dali himself as a boy, with his nurse Llucia on a Catalonian beach.
