About the Art and Artists: Signed By: Sir Peter Blake RA & Chris Gabrin In Pencil Chris Gabrin talks about All New Boots and Panties I first met Ian Dury in 1973 when his band Kilburn and the Highroads were playing the pub circuit and immediately was impressed by Ian Dury’s talent, wit and style. We became friends and when Ian Dury signed to Stiff Records in 1977 he called and asked me to take some pictures for his album sleeve (untitled at the time). There was no particular theme in mind and we started with some uninspiring shots outside his flat in The Oval in South London. Ian Dury had his son, Baxter, with him and suggested we went to a shop he knew, Axfords in Victoria, which Sir Peter Blake had introduced him to. I only shot 24 exposures and Baxter was in just four of them. As soon as the films were developed Ian Dury came round and we immediately chose the same shot. We were so excited by the picture that we went straight into my darkroom and made the first print. The album title New Boots And Panties was subsequently coined by Ian Dury. After Ian's death in 2000, a tribute album was released, a re-recording of New Boots by guest artists under the title of Brand New Boots And Panties. Sir Peter Blake did a painting of Ian Dury for the front cover and requested that we use my photo on the back of the sleeve. Rob Smeaton of Rockoptic, an old friend from my art college days, was working with Sir Peter Blake on publishing limited edition prints of his work and came up with the brainwave of a joint artwork combining the two images. Working with Sir Peter Blake was one of the highlights of my life. This unforgettable experience, however, was tempered with sadness over the loss of Ian Dury. The subsequent artwork, All New Boots And Panties, which we created with the aid of Brad Faine, Peters long-time printmaker is a both a tribute and a fond farewell to Ian Dury from both of us. Walker’s paintings now sell for large sums of money. In 2006 a spray painted work titled “Moona Lisa” sold for an unexpected £54,000 at Bonhams in London. Knowing that there was a possibility that some of his inaugural and early Graffiti work would be painted over Charles immediately created 20 stencil, and hand-painted twenty faithful copies of the original. Publicity Poster for - Time Out London, Gilbert & George, Bridge Flagsky Gallery Exhibition Artist duo Gilbert & George are bringing their vision of the world to a dedicated new exhibition venue in east London, with much of the programme shown for free in line with their "art for all" ethos. The after-life exhibition works show the pair, sometimes disembodied, amid colourful psychedelic depictions of fruits, flowers and leaves. Relentlessly exploring aspects of 21st century turmoil, the pictures reveal much about the changing face of urban living and shifting attitudes towards the after-life. "Most people think of paradise as the after-party," George, 81, said. "The pictures address the people who believe in the after-life with equal courtesy to the people who don't believe in the after-life." Gilbert Prousch, sometimes referred to as Gilbert Proesch (born 17 September 1943 in San Martin de Tor, Italy), and George Passmore (born 8 January 1942 in Plymouth), are two artists who work together as the collaborative art duo Gilbert & George. They are known for their distinctive and highly formal appearance and manner in performance art, and also for their brightly coloured graphic-style photo-based artworks. The artists celebrated their 50th anniversary in April 2023, Gilbert & George opened the Gilbert & George Centre in Heneage Street, London E1 to showcase their work in regular exhibitions and to secure their legacy. The pair are perhaps best known for their large scale photo works, known as The Pictures. The early work in this style is in black and white, later with hand-painted red and yellow touches. They proceeded to use a range of bolder colours, sometimes backlit, and overlaid with black grids. Their work has addressed a wide variety of subject matter including religion and patriotism. The two artists also often appear in their own "pictures". They have described their "pictures" as a sort of "visual love letter from us to the viewer". It shares a dadaist influence of the absurd but has the charming qualities of Horst Janner and his earlier seminal work. For Horst, this is a different and unusual composition in the DaDa influence. Horst Janssen (14 November 1929 – 31 August 1995) was a German draftsman, printmaker, poster artist and illustrator. He had a prolific output of drawings, etchings, woodcuts, lithographs and wood engravings. Janssen was a student of Alfred Mahlau at the Landeskunstschule Hamburg. He first published in the newsweekly Die Zeit in 1947. In the early 1950s, he started working in lithography, on an initiative of Aschaffenburg paper manufacturer Guido Dessauer, using the technical facilities of a coloured paper factory. The first retrospective of Janssen's drawings and graphic works was shown in 1965, first in the kestnergesellschaft Hanover, then in other German cities and in Basel. In 1966, he was awarded Hamburg's Edwin Scharff Prize. International exhibitions followed. In 1968, he received the Grand Prize in graphic art at the Venice Biennale; in 1977, his works were shown at the documenta VI in Kassel. He initiated the Scrawl movement, a school of street art that elected members based on their abilities with line, movement, and narrative composition. Jago was featured in the seminal, eponymous book Scrawl published in 1999. Having studied illustration at the University of the West of England, Mr. Jago’s style, initially heavily illustrative, has evolved into something far more abstracted and expressive. Mr. Jago has taken spray painting to a level of sophistication rarely seen in the medium, there is maturity and depth to his use of colour which he uses to describe the natural world and the cosmos, as he says. “A love of nature has been the biggest influence on my work, the forms and flows that exist within it seem to be appearing more and more nowadays.” These references to landscape imagery with less emphasis on gesture and brushstrokes, combined with a strong focus on colour and its emotional function, is strongly reminiscent of the mid-century Colour Field movement, pioneered by the Abstract Expressionist Mark Rothko. Purchased items and cardboard ‘Free art’ which was found spread around Dismaland INCLUDED – A ‘Dismaland’ – A Disney ‘Mickey Mouse’ hand by DMS - purchased from the gift shop and unopened, some were scatter bombed around the park. This was a limited Edition - Mickey Mouse hand,’ Titled Dead Dismal by dismal Hand, there where other things such as ‘fishfinger in a bag’ and ‘I’m an Imbercile’ balloon. The ‘Banksy’ 32 x 20 cm cardboard art – To the front ’NOLA', spray art, signed ‘Banksy is Dismal’ to the reverse with the Dismaland Bemusement Park stamp. Walker recreated the graffiti'd streets of New York City for Stanley Kubrick's 1999 film, Eyes Wide Shut. His work has also appeared in The Black Eyed Peas promotional video. Walker was a main participant in the 2011 ‘See No Evil event in Bristol’, where he painted "perhaps the most striking piece at the event" one of his bowler-hatted gentleman on the side of a tower block in Nelson Street. About the ART and the ARTIST First known for his chalk drawings in the New York City subway, Keith Haring gained international recognition after a solo exhibition at Tony Shafrazi Gallery in 1982. He continued to draw in the subways. Haring compared the Pop Shop to a Bookstore shop, he added it was his "version of fast food or fast art.'' In addition to Haring's memorabilia, he also sold a few items by other artists. Haring's friend and mentor Andy Warhol was "a big supporter" of the Pop Shop. Insect created the now iconic ‘The Kid’ artwork for San Francisco based hip hop producer DJ Shadow's 2006 for the Outsider album. Paul Insect 'Big Head’ is a snapshot focus on ‘The Kids’ portrait and was issued in 5 colourways. Yellow, Green, Orange, red and Blue. This print was released by Insect and Published by Pictures On Walls (POW) in 2006. Insect first rose to prominence as part of the “insect” artist collective street crew in London which was active between 1996 and 2005. The U.K.-born and based artist, prefers to keep his true identity anonymous. In 2006 to 2012 Insect left the streets as new government policy criminalised street graffiti art. He and many others had direct involvement in (POW) Pictures On Walls gallery in Shoreditch. He was one of the first graffiti artists in Paris, and has been described as the "Father of stencil graffiti. British graffiti artist Banksy and Blek have expressed mutual desire for collaboration and in 2011, Blek was seen adding to a mural begun the previous year by Banksy in the Mission District, San Francisco.
