One of 85 only from the Composition Series Description: 9610 - Limited edition by Piet Mondrian (1872-1944) titled "Composition in red, yellow, blue and black, 1921" This actual print was printed in London and is one from the published edition which was strictly limited to 85 copies Worldwide (numbered in the publishers frank). It will be supplied with a replacement valuation for £1800 (free of charge). Bespoke special hand made mount ready to frame. It has been printed to the highest standard with lightfast inks onto acid-free calcium carbonate-buffered stock, mould-made from 100% cotton. Image size approx. 61cm x 61cm. Mondrian was born in Holland in 1872 and was determined to become a painter from a young age. He qualified with a teaching degree in 1892, but enrolled for painting lessons, before moving to Amsterdam and registering at the Rijksacademie. Mondrian became a member of the art society Kunstliefde "Art Lovers" in Utrecht, where his first paintings were exhibited in 1893. He experimented with many different styles including naturalistic, impressionist and painting many landscapes of his native country. In 1911 he moved to Paris and the influence of Cubism, as evidenced by Picasso and Braque, started to appear almost immediately in his work. He spent the duration of the First World War back in Holland and continued his journey towards abstraction. After the War had finished Mondrian returned to France. He then moved to London in 1938 but relocated to New York just two years later in 1940, where he remained until his death. Mondrian is well known for his contribution to the development of modern abstract art. He strove to portray an extreme 'formal purity' through his combination of simplistic straight lines and bold primary colours. The Image: Mondrian spent the period 1914-1918 (World War I) back at his home in Holland and during this time, he decided to work on an abstract art form which was later classified as 'Neoplastic style'. This work was depicted by lighter colours, simplified colour selection and forms that were balanced in their composition. This work is a result of Mondrian joining the abstraction-creation line which was open to new styles, new techniques and at this time Mondrian began to be fascinated with the idea of the line and dismantling the very definition of painting. He argued that drawing and draughtsmanship which were exemplified in the line, had always lain at the heart of painting from the Renaissance artists to the Impressionists to the Modernists and no one had ever thought to challenge that.. In fact, his first private show was held at the local private library when he was only twelve years old. In high school, Holman developed a love of watercolours and continued to pursue his education through art scholarships to colleges in both Arizona and Utah. During a break in his undergraduate years, he spent two years in Taiwan, where he acquired an impassioned fondness of oriental tradition and art. Holman draws from his experiences in Taiwan and the influence of eastern culture for inspiration as an artist. He does not rely solely on specific movements or periods in art history to drive his own unique style, but does appreciate the fluidity of present day watercolourists. He also mentions a partiality to the works of Andrew Wyeth and the great detail that he revealed in his paintings. Robert Holman's work can best be described as an all-embracing balance of converse yet connected imagery. It is an anecdote of light and dark; from translucent to opaque; from abstract to realism. His style is diverse and captures lifes nuances in both subtle and dramatic ways. Perhaps it is his understanding of the delicacies in oriental culture that allows such a command of translucence and shading. Whether it be a graceful watercolour landscape or a resonant colour field abstract, Holmans work evokes a feeling of peace and tranquillity. The depth of his painting calls viewers to reflection; an uninterrupted moment kept for inner thoughts and deeper meanings. Holman is an ardent traveller. He is most drawn to any tropical surrounding and particularly loves to visit the Hawaiian Islands. Imagery that is reminiscent of his travels often finds its way onto the canvas in the form of lush plant life and blue water shorelines. Portrait of 'Adele Bloch-Bauer I' is a 1907 painting by Gustav Klimt. According to press reports it was sold for US$135 million to Ronald Lauder for his Neue Galerie in New York City in June 2006, which made it at that time the most expensive painting. Klimt took three years to complete the painting. It measures 54" x 54" [138 x 138 cm] and is made of oil and gold on canvas, showing elaborate and complex ornamentation as seen in the Jugendstil style. Klimt was a member of the Vienna Secession, a group of artists that broke away from the traditional way of painting. The picture was painted in Vienna and commissioned by Ferdinand Bloch-Bauer who was a banker and who married Adele when she was 18 and he was 35. Sadly, their three children all died at birth and Adele died in 1925. As a wealthy industrialist who had made his fortune in the sugar industry, he sponsored the arts and favoured and supported Gustav Klimt. Adele Bloch-Bauer became the only model who was painted twice by Klimt when he completed a second picture of her, Adele Bloch-Bauer II, in 1912. The picture was only returned to its rightful owner, Adele's niece, Maria Altmann, in 2006. Maria, who fled occupied Austria to the USA with her husband (saved by ransom from Dachau) remembered her aunt well, 'I never saw her smile, she was always very serious and wore flowing white dresses and carried a gold cigarette holder when it was very unusual for women to smoke, she had a salon rather than ladies tea parties.'. Condition is excellent. On January 2nd, 1911, Kandinsky and other members of the Neue Kunstlervereinigung Munchen, attended a concert featuring works by Arnold Schoenberg. This painting is reality in dissolution, but still present with the grand piano, audience shapes, yellow representing irrepressible vitality and colours and sound going together. This was the first painting that he made after the concert and the word 'impression' referred to paintings that reproduced a direct expression of an internal nature. This picture is not the particular concert he heard, but his overall impression of the music performance however the central image of the painting is the black angular block representing the piano, so this particular concert is at the heart of the picture. It floats on a yellow sound. The listeners, shown as circles and arcs, are covered in the sound but at the same time are focussing on the piano. In this picture Temptation appears to Saint Anthony successively in the form of a horse in the foreground representing strength, sometimes also the symbol of voluptuousness, and in the form of the elephant which follows it, carrying on its back the golden cup of lust in which a nude woman is standing precariously balanced on the fragile pedestal, a figure which emphasizes the erotic character of the composition. The other elephants are carrying buildings on their back; the first of these is an obelisk inspired by that of Bernini in Rome, the second and third are Venetian edifices in the style of Paladio. In the background another elephant carries a tall tower which is not without phallic overtones and in the clouds one can glimpse a few fragments of the Escorial, symbol of temporal and spiritual order. This painting was painted in the studio that the artist occupied for a few days next to the Colony Restaurant in New York. It is the first and the only time that he participated in a contest. It was an invitational artistic competition for a painting on the theme of the temptation of Saint Anthony, organized in 1946 by the Loew Lewin Company, a movie-producing firm. The winning picture was to figure in a film taken from the story "Bel Ami" by Maupassant. Eleven painters took part in the competition, among them Dali, Paul Delaux, Max Ernst.
