The detail and quality of this rare print is outstanding. Following the atomic explosion over Hiroshima in 1945, Dali painted a number of fragmented heads and figures. The upper area of the painting, with the halo and brown clouds resembles photographs of atomic explosions. The female face, with its tender expression and thin halo, is recognisable as the face of a Madonna by Raphael. Dali was a great admirer of renaissance Old Masters, Da Vinci and Raphael to be specific. The skull section in this work is based upon the inside of the dome of the Pantheon building in Rome. Dali has fragmented the head to show how the sense of order from the past, illustrated by the balance and reason of a classical icon, has been shattered by the advent of nuclear weapons. The motif of the shattered head was a common one amongst artists in the post-war years. This reflects the emotional turmoil of a period when nuclear war seemed like a reality, following the use of nuclear weapons in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. In this context, the delicate halo of the Madonna now suggests a nuclear mushroom cloud and her expression, with eyes downcast in prayer, seems particularly appropriate. The vibrant cultures acquired in her home cities, in particular from her time in New Orleans, Miami and Quebec, have inspired Marsha Hammel's passion for the two prevalent themes in her art, music and figure. During her education, Marsha Hammel was taught a classical and European approach to art and, in spite of being told later that contemporary artists should produce conceptual or abstract pieces, the classical idea still governs her work. In its mastery of line, Singer with the Band shows clearly the skills of the draughtsman which Marsha Hammel acquired through her early training of this kind. Marsha Hammel was inspired particularly to paint this scene by a film of the young singer Billie Holliday, whose trademark was a large white flower behind her ear. The painting is also characterised by the artist's sense of colour. Artist Biography: Gerry Baptist's paintings convey an immediate frisson; he creates landscape and figure studies in vibrant colour possessing a natural talent for composition. His paintings are startling in their effectiveness, having a clarity, vivaciousness coupled with a powerful vision. Born in India in 1935 of British/Portuguese parents, Baptist's artistic education began at home; his father a musician, writer and artist, his mother, drawn to nature. Baptist likely gets his insatiable curiosity in life from his bohemian upbringing. "Our home was just a chaos of music, books and art - it was like living in a wild flower garden where everything was allowed to thrive." Later, the family moved to England, where he finished schooling before studying painting and graphics at Walthamstow School of Art and The London College of Printing and Graphic Art, eventually joining an advertising agency as an Art Director. Throughout this time his love of painting continued- after working he often created large scale abstracts well into the night. His inquiring mind led Baptist to be an early adopter of digital technology, it permitted a new freedom, something he relished. He was drawn to the art of those that forged their own paths, such as Willem de Kooning, Philip Guston and Pablo Picasso. He marries influences from Expressionism, Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art and even Graphic Art and Comics into his work. Colour and excitement pour out of his paintings with a cheerful brilliance and perhaps an unconscious link with his early years in India or simply an attraction to the joy and colour he finds around him on a daily basis. His garden landscapes, a vibrant celebration of the good and the beautiful, touch on the more pressing topic of what we could lose if we do not care for the Earth. Born in 1974 in Perugia, the son of the renowned Italian artist Antonio Tamburro, Marco studied art, furniture design and architecture at the Istituto d'Arte, Perugia where he graduated from with Honours in Art and Furniture in 1994. Marco wished to continue his studies and moved to Milan where he went on to further study at the Brera academy of fine arts where he got interested in theatre set design and photography, before making a permanent move to Rome where he graduated from the Rome Academy of Fine Arts in 1999. He has had solo exhibitions in Roma, Udine and Edinburgh, and collective exhibitions in Bari, Viareggio, Venezia, Bologna, Cannes, Padua and New York and Mexico City. His interests in theatre and photography are dominant in his work and he is forever with a paint brush or camera in hand photographing everything from derelict buildings to everyday people rushing past in the streets, to the multitude of statues and fountains of his adopted city which he then recreates as a collage on canvas from his attic studio apartment overlooking many of Rome's famous historical attractions. Portrait of 'Adele Bloch-Bauer I' is a 1907 painting by Gustav Klimt. According to press reports it was sold for US$135 million to Ronald Lauder for his Neue Galerie in New York City in June 2006, which made it at that time the most expensive painting. Klimt took three years to complete the painting. It measures 54" x 54" [138 x 138 cm] and is made of oil and gold on canvas, showing elaborate and complex ornamentation as seen in the Jugendstil style. Klimt was a member of the Vienna Secession, a group of artists that broke away from the traditional way of painting. The picture was painted in Vienna and commissioned by Ferdinand Bloch-Bauer who was a banker and who married Adele when she was 18 and he was 35. Sadly, their three children all died at birth and Adele died in 1925. As a wealthy industrialist who had made his fortune in the sugar industry, he sponsored the arts and favoured and supported Gustav Klimt. Adele Bloch-Bauer became the only model who was painted twice by Klimt when he completed a second picture of her, Adele Bloch-Bauer II, in 1912. The picture was only returned to its rightful owner, Adele's niece, Maria Altmann, in 2006. Maria, who fled occupied Austria to the USA with her husband (saved by ransom from Dachau) remembered her aunt well, 'I never saw her smile, she was always very serious and wore flowing white dresses and carried a gold cigarette holder when it was very unusual for women to smoke, she had a salon rather than ladies tea parties.'. Title: Original Framed Mixed Media Painting On Canvas By The Late Alex Jawdokimov. Description: 5433 - Original framed mixed media painting on canvas by the late Alex Jawdokimov. Note: supplied with a replacement valuation for £2400 along with biographical details on the artist (free of charge) Artist Biography: Born in Smolensk, Russia, Alex Jawdokimov led a remarkable life. He was brought up on a kolhoz (collective farm), but spent many of his childhood years in various concentration camps across Europe. He came to England in 1950 by way of Germany with his mother, who was a World War II refugee. He speaks Russian, German and English and became a naturalised British subject five years after arriving in the country. He was a student at the Somerset College of Art, Taunton. In 1956 Alex Jawdokimov spent a brief spell in Canada, learning to fly with the RAF. He then settled in London in 1958 and formed a Russian Cossack Dance Company (his mother had been a professional dancer in Russia) which toured Britain. He also began to act, mostly in minor roles for television. Film parts then followed and he can count amongst his credits films including Music Lovers, The Tamarind Seed and The Eagle Has Landed. Despite his love of acting, Alex Jawdokimov's interest was still principally in painting and he exhibited alongside hundreds of other artists every weekend on the Hyde Park Railings in the Bayswater Road. He then worked in an advertising agency, afterwards becoming a freelance artist and illustrator, but he soon tired of the routine and commercial aspect of the work and began to devote more and more of his attention to his own style and methods of painting. Film locations offered wonderful opportunities for on-the-spot sketching and the recording of various landscapes. As a result, Jawdokimov has painted many different areas of the British Isles and the Continent. He lived in North London with his family and his love of the city is exemplified in his many pieces of artwork depicting the famous landmarks and characters of the city where he had chosen to settle. Description: 9629 - Stunning limited edition by Wassily Kandinsky titled "Yellow, Red and Blue, 1925" was published in an extremely rare edition of only 20 copies worldwide. The quality of this limited edition is outstanding and in fabulous condition. Professionally framed and mounted with an Art mount. It was printed on extremely high quality Bagasse/cotton paper with a weight of 300gsm. It will be supplied with a certificate of authenticity along with a replacement valuation certificate for £2000 (free of charge). Yellow, Red and Blue was created by Wassily Kandinsky in 1925. The primary colours on the painting feature squares, circles and triangles. The piece can actually be divided in half, with the left side featuring rectangles, squares and straight lines in bright colours while the right side features darker colours in various abstract shapes. The original two-meter-wide painting consists of several main forms: a vertical yellow triangle, an inclined red cross and a large dark blue circle; a multitude of straight (or sinuous) black lines, circular arcs, monochromatic circles and scattered, coloured checkerboards contribute to its delicate complexity. Born in 1895, Boris Smirnoff was largely inspired by the 1900s and 1910s. The dynamic development of pictorial art defined the first decades of the twentieth century. It was an era of experimentation and post-Impressionism, with artists first delving into Expressionism and Abstraction. Many different collectives and communities of artists across the world evolved many ways of expressing these crucial innovations. The Fauves are widely considered to be the first major Post-Impressionist group working at the start of the twentieth century. Including artists such as Henry Matisse within their ranks, the Fauves believed that vivid, other worldly colours and vibrant brushstrokes were a key component of their work. During this same time period a young Pablo Picasso, still in his youth, created his famous Blue and Rose periods in Paris, and by the end of the 1920s he had established the initial ideas of portraying fractured views of reality alongside his contemporary Georges Braque. This movement became known as Analytical Cubism. The De Stijl group in the Netherlands, under the leadership of Piet Mondrian, started to practice important theories about Abstraction. Alongside this, Kasimir Malevich and his contemporaries developed Constructivism and Suprematism in the Soviet Union. These radical styles of art were demanding and politicised, and looked to serve a new world order. The first twenty years of the 20th century can be considered to be the most prolific, and are noted as the era in art history when modern and modernist ideas first began to take hold culturally. Mechanisation in production and ideas of order and rationality ensured the discipline of architecture to develop at an extraordinary rate, and was defined by in the work of Le Corbusier and Gerrit Rietveld. Bauhaus was prevalent at this time and defined the idea of a common discipline across all types of creative art. Most, if not all, of the ideologies of important art movements that we associate with modern and contemporary art can be traced back to the diverse range of work made during this era. The psychological applications of art began to be further explored and developed following the terrors of the WWI. Dadaism, a nonsensical and absurdist movement inspired directly by the war, sprung up in Paris, Berlin, Zurich and Hannover, and launched the careers of artists such as Marcel Duchamp, Francis Picabia, Hannah H and Kurt Schwitters. The essential philosophies behind Dadaism would go on to find ground in Surrealism, which was the first art movement to fully integrate psychology and ideas about the subconscious, and took great inspiration from the work of Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung. At the same time, Expressive painting was being further established and explored in various places around the world. the Nabis in France were the first to truly explore this movement at the turn of the century, and German groups such as Die Brucke and Der Blaue Reiter soon followed suit, developing the careers of legendary artists such as Kirchner, Franz Marc, and Wassily Kandinsky. "Sleep" is a 1937 painting by artist Salvador Dali, and is one of his most recognizable works. The painting is a visual rendering of the body's collapse into sleep, as if it was a collapse into a separate condition of being. Against a deep blue summer sky, a huge disembodied head with eyes dissolved in sleep, hangs suspended over an almost bare landscape. The head is "soft", vulnerable and distorted. And what should be a neck tapers away to drop limply over a crutch. A dog appears on the left, its head in a crutch too, as if half asleep itself. The head is supported above land by a series of wooden crutches. The mouth, nose and also eyes are all held in place by the crutches, suggesting that the head might collapse if they were removed. Crutches are a familiar motif in Dali's works. As Dali attests in his book, The Secret Life of Salvador Dali, "I have often imagined the monster of sleep as a heavy, giant head with a tapering body held up by the crutches of reality.
