Composition Series Description: 9405 - Limited edition by Piet Mondrian (1872-1944) titled "Composition II in red, blue and yellow, 1930" This actual print was printed in London and is one from the published edition which was strictly limited to 85 copies Worldwide (numbered in the publishers frank). It has also signed by the Master Printer. It has been printed to the highest standard with lightfast inks onto acid-free calcium carbonate-buffered stock, mould-made from 100% cotton. Professionally mounted and framed. Mondrian was born in Holland in 1872 and was determined to become a painter from a young age. He qualified with a teaching degree in 1892, but enrolled for painting lessons, before moving to Amsterdam and registering at the Rijksacademie. Mondrian became a member of the art society Kunstliefde "Art Lovers" in Utrecht, where his first paintings were exhibited in 1893. He experimented with many different styles including naturalistic, impressionist and painting many landscapes of his native country. In 1911 he moved to Paris and the influence of Cubism, as evidenced by Picasso and Braque, started to appear almost immediately in his work. He spent the duration of the First World War back in Holland and continued his journey towards abstraction. After the War had finished Mondrian returned to France. He then moved to London in 1938 but relocated to New York just two years later in 1940, where he remained until his death. Mondrian is well known for his contribution to the development of modern abstract art. He strove to portray an extreme 'formal purity' through his combination of simplistic straight lines and bold primary colours. The Image. Mondrian spent the period 1914-1918 (World War I) back at his home in Holland and during this time, he decided to work on an abstract art form which was later classified as 'Neoplastic style'. This work was depicted by lighter colours, simplified colour selection and forms that were balanced in their composition. This work is a result of Mondrian joining the abstraction-creation line which was open to new styles, new techniques and at this time Mondrian began to be fascinated with the idea of the line and dismantling the very definition of painting. He argued that drawing and draughtsmanship which were exemplified in the line, had always lain at the heart of painting from the Renaissance artists to the Impressionists to the Modernists and no one had ever thought to challenge that. His long career in the world of Art and Music began at seventeen when he was hired as assistant art director at Columbia Records in New York City, where he spent weekends playing trumpet in Jazz clubs for extra money. In the period that followed, the music business exploded, and Maurer worked designing album covers and promotional material for popular artists. His co-worker at the time: a young artist by the name of Andy Warhol. As Andy left to pursue a career in "serious" art, Maurer expanded his commercial art studio to tackle a wide range of projects for the music and film industries. His position brought him into contact with a group of artists whose names are well-recognized today, from Pollack to Rauschenberg, and Maurer was strongly influenced by their work and ideas as he developed his own unique style of painting. Throughout the mid-sixties, Maurer continued his work for the music industry. He worked with famed British recording artist Donovan, developing album covers, poster designs, and even a film for Warner Brothers. It was during this period that Maurer's work as a painter first gained recognition, appearing in galleries in New York, Los Angeles, and Paris. In the early nineties, Maurer realized that the empire of music and art that he had helped to build left him little time to pursue his true passion: painting. He moved to Atlanta where he has lived ever since, developing a vast catalogue of works and perfecting his personal style. In the last decade, his work has hung in a wide variety of venues, including the Georgia Capitol, the Carnegie Museum in Oxnard, California, and the U.C.L.A. campus. His commissions include work for organizations like ESPN and Motorsport America magazine, as well as for individuals such as David Bowie, Boy George, and his old friend Donovan. His recent works vary widely in subject matter, addressing fascinatingly disparate elements within our culture. Maurer's series "Vanishing Georgia", made up of 30 paintings, depicts key events and periods in the history of his new southern home. He also celebrates the heroes of our culture in "Sport Legends", as well as the personalities that entertain us in series' such as "Movie Stars" and "Famous Musicians". As a painter, Maurer creates large mixed media pieces that are very much a product of his varied training and experience. Salvador Dali's interest in new scientific discoveries, particularly quantum physics and nuclear physics, is key to the works he produced in this time period. In Confesiones inconfesables (The Unspeakable Confessions, Bruguera, 1975) he recalled how "the atomic explosion from 6 August 1945 had seismically shaken me. From that moment on, the atom was my favourite subject of reflection." In the same decade, the 1940s, this new fascination was combined with the artist moving closer to the Catholic religion, along with a return to Academic Art by virtue of themes that drew inspiration from Western tradition, such as the Renaissance in Italy, and the Golden Age in Spain. Both influences together would give rise to the so-called "atomic period", and the publication of Manifiesto M√≠stico (Mystic Manifesto, 1951), where Dal√≠ explained the symbiosis that had lead him to the mystic-nuclear: "Every quarter of an hour and quarter of a second matter is in a constant and accelerated process of dematerialisation and disintegration, slipping through the grasp of the wise and showing us spirituality in all substance. In Maximum Speed of Raphael's Madonna the artist borrows the image of a Madonna by Raphael Sanzio, one of the great masters of the Renaissance and hugely admired by Dal√≠. The work synthesises great classical tradition through the theme of religion with the discoveries and experiences of modern art, engendering an image built from an interpretation of the theoretical principles of physics and art‚Äôs visual possibilities. The face of the Virgin breaks up into spheres, geometrically perfect figures, and into forms resembling rhinoceros horns as Dal√≠ unearths logarithmic spiral forms based on the pattern of Divine Proportion. The dynamic movement of the elements is joined by the discontinuity of the matter, linking this work to the process of atomic disintegration. Marco was born in 1974 in Perugia, the son of the renowned Italian artist Antonio Tamburro, Marco studied art, furniture design and architecture at the Istituto d'Arte, Perugia where he graduated from with Honours in Art and Furniture in 1994. Marco wished to continue his studies and moved to Milan where he went on to further study at the Brera academy of fine arts where he got interested in theatre set design and photography, before making a permanent move to Rome where he graduated from the Rome Academy of Fine Arts in 1999. He has had solo exhibitions in Roma, Udine and Edinburgh, and collective exhibitions in Bari, Viareggio, Venezia, Bologna, Cannes, Padua and New York and Mexico City. His interests in theatre and photography are dominant in his work and he is forever with a paint brush or camera in hand photographing everything from derelict buildings to everyday people rushing past in the streets, to the multitude of statues and fountains of his adopted city which he then recreates as a collage on canvas from his attic studio apartment overlooking many of Romes famous historical attractions. Note: supplied with a replacement valuation for £2000 along with biographical details on the artist (free of charge) Artist Biography: Born in Smolensk, Russia, Alex Jawdokimov has led a remarkable life. He was brought up on a kolhoz (collective farm), but spent many of his childhood years in various concentration camps across Europe. He came to England in 1950 by way of Germany with his mother, who was a World War II refugee. He speaks Russian, German and English and became a naturalised British subject five years after arriving in the country. He was a student at the Somerset College of Art, Taunton. In 1956 Alex Jawdokimov spent a brief spell in Canada, learning to fly with the RAF. He then settled in London in 1958 and formed a Russian Cossack Dance Company (his mother had been a professional dancer in Russia) which toured Britain. He also began to act, mostly in minor roles for television. Film parts then followed and he can count amongst his credits films including Music Lovers, The Tamarind Seed and The Eagle Has Landed. Despite his love of acting, Alex Jawdokimov's interest was still principally in painting and he exhibited alongside hundreds of other artists every weekend on the Hyde Park Railings in the Bayswater Road. He then worked in an advertising agency, afterwards becoming a freelance artist and illustrator, but he soon tired of the routine and commercial aspect of the work and began to devote more and more of his attention to his own style and methods of painting. Film locations offered wonderful opportunities for on-the-spot sketching and the recording of various landscapes. As a result, Jawdokimov has painted many different areas of the British Isles and the Continent. He lived in North London with his family and his love of the city is exemplified in his many pieces of artwork depicting the famous landmarks and characters of the city where he had chosen to settle. He was born in Salerno in 1928 not far from the Amalfi Coast and began painting in the wake of the Posillipo School, following the road marked by the Dutch Pitloo, Giacinto Gigante and the Palizzi brothers. In his compositions, colour penetrates visual reality, making it thicker, becoming both reality and event at the same time. Farina sometimes resorts to different solutions using collages, strips of coloured cardboard, strips of masonite, plastic plates, silver papers, assemblages of canvases, all subjected to the need for a painting that is still colour.
